True clinical depression is most definitely a disease/disorder, not just a mood. I have both family and friends with clinical depression and it's not their fault, it really isn't.

My dad has bipolar disorder, that sucks to witness.

Ugh, god yes, so does my sister. Terrible thing for a family to live with.. probably even worse for her though.
