Is Half-Life 3 going to use the Source engine?

Yeah, that's an issue for me too, I wish they would make it so that Steam would notify you when an update is available, and ask you if you want to install it or not. And of course have the option to automatically download and install updates for people who want that.

Steam lets you pick what games to update. Valve also had enough bandwidth if you look at the steam page when the game came out it had a crap load + it was using the most EVER. So what are you talking about?

I don't like autoupdates... maybe it's because I am not a simple user, but an advanced user... but I don't like them, and here's why. I'd prefer to download patches myself and install them - it takes only 30 seconds extra to go to the official site and download from there. However, it gives me control - I can back up the files that the patch changes, etc. Anyhow, I can revert the patch if I need to - I have seen poor patches that make the game worse. Hasn't been the case so far with HL2, although some people have reported a patch making matters worse for them. I know that if an update messed something up for me, I would be damn annoyed about not being able to revert.

This is true, Valve better watch out, if they f*ck something up they are going to have to make a patch fast to fix it.

sure, you can turn off auto-updates, but when you try to play the game, it won't let you until you've updated.

unless your in offline mode, but we all know how wonderful that is.

this is how threads get off topic, some one posts information slightly off topic like, "it will use a different engine like hl1 did." Then some one feels the need to correct them, whether they researched it or not. Then that person feels like he needs to defend his answer. Then some one makes a joke about it, and we start talking about that.... can I be a moderator?

I remember a patch for Civ3 now that greatly screwed the game up once... well, at least people could revert then. Now, I imagined a HL2 update with a side effect that 80% of users would get some huge bug - lose sound, terrible slowdowns or something like that. Then, Valve would probably be cursed at very loudly, Steam and all.

and there already has been patches which have made it hl2 worse, or even unplayable.

Steam would probably revert if it really had to...I hope...

Valve would have to make a revert patch. When Steam updates, it updates the files in GCFs, and does not back the old ones up or anything.

Aslong as they did I would be happy

Didn't Valve already have to withdraw a Steam release until a major issue was resolved? Or was that back in the WON days? I feel old.

I really don't find auto updating that intuitive myself. I kind of like how games such as Dawn of War do it: alert you to a patch but also supply a url you can utilise, presuming that you're prepared to screen grab

I've honestly got more faith in my download resumers than Steam: heck, thinking of Dawn of War, it corrupted- probably after a mod or something- so I reinstalled it. To get it up to date, I just ran the three .exe's I had stored in a zip file. Simple. Issues in Steam games take far longer to resolve...

Did Valve say anything about this? Do we know if HL3 is going to use the Source engine or Valve is going to make a new engine?
If they're making a new engine, i really can't wait 6 years for it. But in the other hand, if they use the Source engine and release the game in like 2006, it will be outdated. I hope they just improve the Source engine (shadows definately need some attention) and release the game in no more than 3 years.
of course will use the source engine

AND WILL LOOK LIKE THIS!!!:eek::rolling:

I thought the shadows were great in half-life 2. Ravenholm was awesome, even if it doesen't use dynamic lighting.

Source was made for modders ecspecially. It was also made for a few other things. What am I gett at? One of those things was to make source VERY VERY EASILY UPDATABLE. Thus, they can easily add new shaders. Or Dx10 advantages etc.. They can go back and add dynamic lighting etc..

Also they will be including IBR. Image based rendering if i remember correctly. This is a method of modeling and rendering objects based in photographs to create photorealistic settings. Thus allowing a new level of.. REALISM!
BTW I have info that can easily clarify HL3 wont look like that. Some people..once..or did..or hoped..or wished it would look like that.
YOU CAN SEE THE HAND!! :).
I rest my case.
That is a real photograph of some guy holding a crowbar.
