Few details are surfacing about the mysterious missile launch seen Monday night (Nov. 8) from a point just off the southern coast of California, with aerospace and defense officials trying to find out exactly who launched it and why.

"We're looking into it," Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, told SPACE.com.

We're looking in to it? That's reassuring.

This wasn't a small missile, clearly not some hobbyist. So get your tin foil hats people, they are coming for us.

it's an initiative to build glass parking lots in the middle east; one missile at a time

I dont understand why NOBODY is looking for the crash site. It would be the obvious logical step to locate where it hit and gather information. But it seems like everyone just cares who and where it was launched, but nobody cares where it actually landed. If they find the crash site they can find shitton of information that can pretty much answer every question.

well the coast of California or some parts of the coast are actually used to test types of missiles non of witch i think carry live warheads

But if it was a test by a private company or by the government someone would be aware of it. Nobody seems to know what this was, not NORAD, not the pentagon, not the navy, nobody.

I agree about the crash site, but for how big this was I wouldnt be suprised if that could be anywhere in North America.

maybe it was a new type of hypersonic missile and government doesn't want anybody to know maybe they will come out with a lie saying it was something else

Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at Harvard University who tracks suborbital launches, said that while the contrail appeared similar to those left in missile test launches, the more likely explanation was that it was simply a standard aircraft contrail that was captured on video from an unusual airborne angle.

Other scientists and satellite observers, meanwhile, said the contrail appeared to be moving too slowly to be the result of any sort of missile launch.

I helped build a model rocket for my nephew this weekend so I think I'm qualified to make the call that this doesn't look like a plane.

I just heard that according to some prophet World War III starts tomorrow (10th November) due to some local misunderstanding.

Makes sense now. Run to the Vaults!

Cool video. Wish someone would have taken some hi res photos of it. Missile launch + sunset = gorgeous.

I just heard that according to some prophet World War III starts tomorrow (10th November) due to some local misunderstanding.

"Let it be disclosed in January, day 25, year 2005 and within a month let it be taken to the one I will refer herein. If he cannot be reached, give it to people around him. So help you God! To the joy of this world, the one promised to the world will come in Romania. The whole world will rejoice at his birth."

Did this woman predict the production Borat?

There was a nuke that was suppose to hit LA like a week ago, maybe it's just late.

Apparently the first shot is from Israel onto Iran and then comes global nuclear hell, assisted by the US.

EDIT: Apparently the prediction for tomorrow is a fabrication by a Russian newspaper, at least according to Baba Vanga's ... Facebook.

maybe that big breasted lady can tell us whats going on

It's pretty strange, but I think it will turn out to be a couple of gun-happy people with a large inheritance who decided to do something dramatic.

Nuclear Launch Detected.

The notion that this was a "show of might" by the United States is ridiculous.

I mean, some show of might that is if the military denies it is theirs.

Also, since when do we need to demonstrate that we have the capacity to launch powerful weapons? I mean come the **** on, we spend more money on our defense budget than the next 26 countries combined... we don't do this kind of bullshit... that's what North Korea does.

Interesting story, I have no idea what it could be. I guess I'll just wait here for a bit for kathaksung to turn up and let us know.

Jet contrail seen head-on at sunset seems like the most likely possibility. It's happened before too.

Guy has a good point that no one anywhere else seems to have seen anything unusual because from any other angle you would be able to tell that it was a contrail.

Also, wouldn't you be able to see the light of the propellant?

42secs onwards in the video posted on the last page. Could just be the sun reflecting off a plane though. Interesting none-the-less!

I'm kinda hoping it was one of these evil genius people with their plans for world domination and stuff.

Nuclear Launch Detected.

The problem is that it wasn't detected (at least according to the official word coming from the US Govt.). NORAD and NORTHCOM have both denied that anything came up on thier radar systems and have stated that they've been through the logs and there is nothing that fits with this and there were no reports from any pilots in the area.

Which is very odd.

If it was an official launch everyone who should have known about it would have...weird.

It could have been a top secret test, but I would expect it would be tested way out in open water. So no, I think it was aliens.

The fact that it wasn't detected at all gives great credibility to the fact that it's simply a plane contrail.

There were no fast moving objects detected in that time frame though.

/spooky jingle

So with all the fancy radars and stuff, is it not possible to establish where the missile was launched from, based on its position when it registered on the radar and its trajectory?

Shouldn't we know something by now, or be fed some bullshit if it was some sort of whoopsie? Or did I miss some official statement?
