Hello. I've been playing HL2 and have run into a few loading screens, about 5 so far. Three of them were fine, really fast and no problem. Now, I'm running into loading screens that are taking 5+ mins to load! I have a new comp: an AMD 4000+ athlon, geforce 7800gt, 2gb of ram, 2.47 ghz. Now, wtf, shouldn't I just blow through these loading screens? They are taking way too long and ruining my experience. Can anybody help me get past these annoyances? Thanks !!

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but some of these HL2 bundled games Like (Counter-Strike, Day Of Defeat, Deathmatch Classic, Half-Life, Blue Shift and Apposing Force) are actually old games which were meant to run on 16-bit Windows 98 and Windows Me Etcetera. Some software will take time to load/run on 32-Bit Windows XP, not because of the color rate (16bit versus 32Bit) but because of the resolution.
Most of the newer Monitors/Video Cards run minimally on 1024x768 screen resolution and that’s the highest some of these classic HL games run on.
Another example is that Lost Coast and HL2 do load and run pretty fast on any resolution as long as your system can put out such performance.
So in this case you are over qualified to run some of these classic games.
I’m figuring this from technical point of view and I stand to be corrected.

Try lowering your screen resolution to 800x600 and your color quality to 16bit reboot system and launch that particular game and see what happens.

Good Luck.

You stand corrected. I tried what you said. Nothing. This is really gay. I pay $40 for a game, and now I cannot play it because I am overqualified? That's ridiculous. God, I just wanna PLAAAAAAAAAY! Any other ideas??

Well I'm a HL2 single player and I'm really fresh out of ideas. Wait and see hopefully a HL2 more experience person will answer your thread.

Make sure your ram and page files are wokring correctly.
If they are try re-installing.

Is your processor 64-bit? If so, try adding the parameter "-32bit" to the shortcut of the game.
Example :
C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe -applaunch 220 -32bit
(The bold bit means it will launch HL2.)
