I am up against an error in mental ray I have not seen before. I am trying to render an early version of an indoor scene with a jack o lantern and relying on global illumination for lighting effects. It seems mental ray is not liking my jack o lantern concave model and is making it glow full bright. I it is also doing it with other concave objects i place in the scene to test, as well as messing with the placeholder table I set up underneath it. When I render the scene without the jack o lantern the GI works fine.

Has anyone here ran into this problem or have any clue to how to solve this? Thanks a ton.

Wait, why are you relying on global illumination if you have a light source in your scene? I also don't know what you mean by concave model.

If I were you, I would place a point light inside of the model and set up a shading network on your pumpkin to achieve a subsurface scattering effect. Then rely on raytrace shadows.

can you describe the shader you're using on the pumpkin?

and glo-boy, global illumination and point lights are not mutually exclusive (in fact you need alight source to use global illumination), I dont know what you mean by that

also concavity shouldnt be an issue, I've render in mental ray with concave objects all the time

Well, I guess I was just talking in terms of maya. I forgot that max can use mental ray also, and that's what most of you use here. I don't really know anything about max so nevermind.

I hate rendering in maya, except with Turtle. Max's Skylight + Light Tracer FTW.

is that a matte or phong based texture?, and please use standard lighting, its a lot better.

it's mental reay though, it doesnt matter if you use max maya or XSI (for the record I use the first 2)

as per glo boy's recoomendation though, it does seem you can get your desired effect if you put an omni in the pumpkin with GI photons on, then give the pumpkin a FastSSS shader... then maybe put on FG at the end for that sexiness we all love from MR :)
