Microphone problems

So I just got a new comp and it's pretty decent. I got a mic for it but the problem is Ventrilo and in games and stuff it never works. It's plugged in correctly but it doesn't pick up my voice. The only way to fix this is to go to control panel and voice and test hardware. When I do this the mic works but only for about 15-20 minutes and then i have to do it all over again. I got a new mic today thinking that might be the problem but it's still doing it. I ALWAYS have to go and test hardware and it will work for like 10-15 minutes. Everyone I've asked has been completely baffled by this. Does anyone know what the problem is? I'd really like to fix this situation. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Make sure you've selected Microphone in Recording Control.

Also, it reverts back to Wave every time you join a server in a sourcegame if you have an audigy soundcard. To fix this, enter

voice_forcemicrecord 0

in the console.

K that doesn't seem to be working. For some reason it's default set to Rear Mic and when i select microphone it won't work at ALL even after i test hardware. I put that command in the team fortress 2 console, but i'm not sure if it works or not. Maybe i should retest and see if it stays. Is it always going to remember that console command? And my audio and recording codec is sigmatel. Perhaps i need a driver update or something along those lines? Once again thanks for the help. And also sigmatel is my sound card so I don't know if the console thing will help since it's not audigy

TF2 will remember the command, but since you don't have an audigy, it won't do anything anyway.

I don't think I can help you any further since I've never heard about or worked with any soundcards different than the creative ones

would a new sound card fix the problem? what would you reccomend?

Do you really think that could fix the problem? Could you explain a little bit about how that would solve the problem?

em try to change the soundcards place that was a problem i had whit my soundcard and lancard when i had reinstaled computer
