To all the people saying the Combine turned into gluttonous, fat(ter) slugs because of their technology:

how does a species, in the same instance, (de)evolve because of the same exact technology the helps them survive, precluding any "selection" from taking place?

technology and medicine go against any kind of evolution, both maladaptive and adaptive.

Really technology aids maladaptive evolution and takes away much of the benefit of adaptive evolution. That way (almost) all mutations get accepted into the gene pool producing an overall negetive effect.
