It may help if you give us a few details.
Monitor make and model, gfx card and driver version etc etc

Help us to help you.

ive got a nvidia gforce4 mx440 graphics card and an iiyama bx3814ut tft monitor. the light changes from green to yellow indicating the monitor is in stand by mode.

Sounds like your settings might be too high.

Do you know how to add "-autoconfig" to the HL2 shortcut or Steam "Play games" entry?

Sometimes my monitor turns off whenever it changes resolutions even if it is within it's range... I've had some luck with shutting it off and turning it back on.

Or perhaps your graphic card sucks.

I can't play HL2 on anything above 1024*768 without my monitor going on standby, even though I can get much higher resolutions in other games such as Doom3. Sounds like you need to try lowering that resolution, although I couldn't find a way other than in-game (where you cant see anything). How old is your monitor? I ended up plugging a friends newer, better monitor in and it worked all the way up to 1600*1200, turned it down to 1024*768 and swapped my monitor back. There's probably an easier way around it, but I couldn't find it. :dozey:

Put everything on lower/lowest settings, sorry to tell you incase you didn't know, your card is very poor, Halflife 2 needs more than that really. Consider an upgrade in the near future.

I've had that problem on my old monitor, but that's because I was forcing a refresh rate in the launch options that wasn't supported on my monitor at Resolutions above 1024x768. Check that you haven't got anything in your launch options for HL2.

This happened to me when I use to play morrowind....all i did was download the latest drivers for my card and everything was fine.

ive tryed installing the latest drivers but still no luck. its strange how it used to work but then suddenly stopped. how can i change my graphic options if i cant see what im doing? oh and hectic glenn i know its poor :dozey:
