...but I found him

what an exciting friday night it has been. Approximately 1h 30 minutes ago my dog ran away. i went after him and it took about an hour before I found him. Damn I got scared there for a moment. I had a hunch where he might've gone so after circling around for a while decided to try the the nearest beach. he wasn't there but I saw dog's footprints in the snow so i knew he had been there. about 5 minutes later I saw him but the poor little fella was so confused and scared that he ran away again and disappeared. It took about 15 minutes untill I found him again like 500 yards away from my house. This time I took it slowly not to scare him. he also got nearly hit by a car, it was only like a matter of seconds.

but now the young prince is back home with me and everything's fine in the magic kingdom. what a perilous journey it was and oh the things he must've seen!
 
Next time, tie a steak around your neck. He won't run away.

I'd be pretty freaked out if my dog ran away, glad to see you got him back.

PS: What kind of dog is it?
 
Heh, dogs.

My "friend's" dog is constantly getting away. Always comes back though. They believe he's Houdini reincarnated. One point her and her dad were in the car home, and they drove past this white dog, several streets down. They double taked and realised it was him! And he just shot away. When they got back to the house, he was waiting there panting as if he'd been "expecting them" :P
 
Kinda cute, that dog.

I've never owned a dog, only owned cats. And my cat, we put him out all the time and he goes all over the neighborhood, but I never have to worry about him coming back. He knows where home is.

Only time I ever really worried about him was when he got hit by a car. But the very next day he was alright.
 
I once had a Golden Retriver and he was constantly running away. He even made it to the local newspapers when he ran off to the park and ran onto thin ice on the lake, which broke. He was swimming in circles in freezing water for about 30 minutes before the firemen rescued him. He died at the age of 3, due to some inherent heart malfunction (it just popped) ;/

Now I've got a German Shepard and he never runs off.
 
Good to hear you got your dog back, you really do get attached to the buggers. I've had a similar problem, many times actually. But that was when she's young, now she's just a stubborn bitch.

My dog's batshit insane. She's quite intelligent, but sees absolutely no danger, in anything ever. The world is all a merry playground to her. She once crossed a very busy road :|

She has such a mind of her own, she does whatever she wants to do. And that's sometimes very funny but also frustrating. She listens perfectly, but only when she doesn't have any objections to what you're saying. For example, she normally doesn't wanna go for a walk, and nothing you do will get her to come along if she doesn't want it. Shouting, pulling, asking her nicely, baby talk, dragging her across the street, nothing. Untying her worked for a while, until she realized it was a trick to get her moving, now that doesn't work any more either. Yesterday, I untied her and she walked back home again in a big "fuck you, I ain't coming" pace. But she needs to walk, at 35kg she's already quite heavy for a Lab.

My dog is just an imbecile, a golden retriever that has the brain capacity of a goldfish. The family's "new baby" or whatever, I think it's just a hairy retard.

My cat on the other hand is quite likable.

My dog used to run away all the time. YOu know what the solution was? get her fat. Now she has arthritis due to being a tub of lard, she won't even get up for food anymore.:D
 
I wish there was some sort of miraculous technology in the future that could somehow communicate clearly and accurately to common pets like dogs and cats, that with roads come great dangers, and if they can help it, never to cross them without being alert of approaching automobiles.

Roads are death traps... I made a thread a long time ago about this tiny little dog that was chasing me as I walked home(he was chasing me, I was walking and looking back to make sure he didn't bite me in the ankle)... and finally made it home after the dog lost interest. My brother then got home and told me he saw a dead dog on the side of the road, and the description he gave me was exactly that of the little dog that had been barking and chasing me. <sigh>

Roads are death traps for these poor creatures.


I don't have to worry about it as much with my cat, at least I don't think I do. She's the very cautious and loner sort who doesn't like to associate with anything. I let her out all the time, and when she wants back in, we have an agreement that she claws at the mesh screen on my window, and I hear it and let her in. Works beautifully all the time, except a couple times she has worried me by staying out so late.

She loves me though... used to be she was terrified of me(because she was once a stray I believe), but now she melts against my hands and purrs like a kitten... often crawling on top of my chest when I watch TV from my bed and perching there, kneading with her claws or just sprawling out and sleeping.
 
I love pets, just like Raziaar I wish there was way to make it safer for animals if they ever run off

how do cats learn where their home is and always come back? because i know some cats just cant. Do you need to teach them?

Are there just some kind of cats that adopt better?

Most animals are very good about knowing where their reliable food sources are and companionship/shelter and all that, and can easily navigate back to them if they don't wander away too far.
 
My dog ran away and got hit by a truck.

Whats the best way to find out if your pet have actually memorized the way back home without the risk of possibilily losing the pet?
 
My dog does that every damn day. ffs, now we don't even care. She just finds her way home and sits in front of the door till we open it. She can also jump our 8 ft tall fence if we are leaving in the car or the neighbor's dog comes out.

I think it's mostly an instinctual thing, utilizing scents sounds, sights etc. The cat we have that I was speaking of, was brought from Austin Texas, where it had a whole other home memorized. It was an outside cat and never ran off, always returning at the time of feeding and generally hanging around sometimes. During winter, she became an inside cat and has been one ever since, going out when she wants, coming in when she wants.

I imagine depending on where you live, it can throw off the animal's natural ability to find it's way back, because cities can be very chaotic and terrifying not only for humans, but especially for animals. Overwhelming noises, sights, smells, all that jazz.

I don't know anything scientific, I'm just going based on my opinion.
 
Cats don't really need any training. Keep em inside for the first few days and then let them out.

I had a cat in my house once and another cat chases him away on his first night here, found his way back alright the next morning though.

Although one wont go without the other
I have to keep my female dog on a chain cause she is the most likely to run away and if she goes the male goes

I dont like dogs even though i have 4 cats, 2 dogs, 2 turtles, 2 cockatiels and 3 horses... my dog Fred has the I.Q. of less than an eggplant and Skye is just stupid. I prefer my cats. My bird Nacho has a tendency to growl at me even when he's on the floor faced with my impressive (to him) height.

you know whatever you call fred he always answers, "hey turd! get over here!"
