#1 Gman is a hallucination caused by toxic materials and radiation released from Black Mesa causing gordon freeman and other people to hallucinate.

#2 Gman was thought up by gordon while he was in a mental institute and he dreampt that he was in black mesa. so hl3 will be gordon's escape from the mental hospital.

Gman can be seen before the resonance cascade so it cannot be a hallucination

That would make all of HL2 a hallucination, and I didnt pay no $50 for a dream sequence!

Gman represents an 'alien force'. Thats my humble opinion.

I say:
Gman is Human...ish
He is 'employers' are probably not-so-human-like-beings, or other humans from future (but i doubt that)
His voice is messed up because he got wounded somewhere like...in the lungs er..something (remember when Gman says freeman reminds him of himslef in op4? surviving against all odds and whatnot? That might be when he was wounded, but whatever)
Why is he invincible? Maybe because he isnt really in the same world, just appearing to be, so bullets go right through him, and gman can just disapper/appear when he has to.

But its hard to explain anything else, like WHY gman is doing what he is doing with freeman and whats in his briefcase and stuff

That would be a twisted climax. Freeman escapes the institution only to find out that the portal storms are just commencing and the world is being destroyed. Instead of arresting or turning him in, the local police and security will be his allies, because he is the only person who knows what these things are. His hallucinations include people he knows. Gman is a bank clerk, Barney is the local mall's security guard and alyx is a call girl.

The Gman is invincible because VALVe didn't want the kids running around killing the Gman, ruining the story. He has the breifcase to the add the whole 'government' look IMHO

It is the same with Captain Foley, you can not kill him, nothing can kill him. If you could kill him then you could not continue Call of Duty :|

yup but.. why not just not be able to fire when they are around why make him invincible - in HL1 theres a reason as it's not easily done in hl1 code.. but in hl2 theres no real excuse!?
