So I am a gamer of valve, the first half-life was my favorite game of all time and had such a huge impact on my life as a gamer. And soon after team fortress which with its army style team gameplay blew me away with a flame-thrower, engineer and a spy class that was revolutionary for online multiplayer FPS games. Now tf2 is a great game with an art style that is pretty unique, I guess I was hoping for something and wished and just actualy epected them to do a military style remake that was more geared towards the military style weapons and capture the flag. Yeah I was let down and I guess I never recovered from that.

I'm guessing the TFC graphics spawned from HL1's boxy, military looking buildings. Which is what XFactor is getting at, I presume.

you suck.

TF2 would have been lost in the crowd of so called "realistic" war-games that have flooded the market... it was a very clever move for valve to take it in another direction.

not to mention that like they've said the art direction now compliments the game-play....it wouldn't have made sense otherwise.

go play battlefield, if you want military style game-play.

The cartoon art style is one of the things that makes this game unique. It looks fantastic, it is by far the best looking Source game to date. The explosions, effects, textures and models all look brilliant, I don't see why you are complaining.

You may be interested in fortress forever, the source mod that redid TFC, it's closer to the original and more military in direction/style.

I think most people (and probably the OP) expected something 'military' from TF2 since that's what Valve originally intended for it. Not because TFC was much like that.

Changing the art style and therefore the personality of the entire game was the best thing Valve could have done.

I can see that being true, considering the names of the majority of the classes.

@Robert - Well, those are unchanged from TFC. I mean Valve's explicit intention - way back in the day when TF2 was in its embryonic stages, CS was in its relative infancy and HL2 wasn't even on the horizon - was to make a game that was somewhat realistic and military themed. There was a lot of buzz about it. If you're unaware of it, check Youtube for 'old team fortress 2' or something to see footage of what they had in mind back then.

But anyone who still prefers that alternate reality version of TF2, even after the awesomeness that TF2 turned out to be in real reality, is living in a fantasy world where Valve wasn't beaten to the punch by 50 trillion gritty, realistic, military-styled shooters that made the old idea of TF2 redundant - games which also, incidentally, revealed that the whole premise of 'realistic' war shooters wasn't all as awesome as we'd perhaps thought, once upon a time.

Team Fortress 2 has a mesmerizing style, feel, and humor to it. If they went in any other direction with the style the gameplay, would make no sense, and vice versa. Realistic military simulators are a dime a dozen and frankly, never work realistically. Fun and realism are enemies. TF2 is ridiculous and is proud of it.

This.

TF2 is unique in that it spawned an entire cottage industry of military-themed multiplayer shooters without actually being released.

Thing I don't like is how Valve tried to make it funny, unlike TFC which was trying to be serious but was just hilarious.

If you go for hilarious on purpose and succeed you've accomplished something. Games are hilarious accidently by nature.

In my case it puts me off TF2 slightly, but that's just me. I still think it's a damn good game.

The art style perfectly fits the over the top and unrealistic gameplay as well as the archetypal character's they used. I think Valve chose wisely.
