I'm kind of a fan of National Anthems(well, not really) so why don't you post your and/or other countr(y/ies)'s national anthem(s). That would be kinda fun, wouldn't it? :cheese:

UK's one is Land Of Hope And Glory

Oh wait thats what its MENT to be, what it IS, is infact God save our stupid bloody crappy anthem

The only time I like hearing out national anthem is at the start of an international football match. It gets me really fired up for the match ahead and its great to hear thousands upon thousands of people belt it out in the stadium. Glorious. Other than that its kinda boring.

I mean the whole texts..***le Britannia goes something like this, right?
Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves. Britons never, never, never will be slaves. Right?

Here is Sweden's. Only a few people have ever heard the last two parts.

1
Du gamla, Du fria, Du fjällhöga nord
Du tysta, Du glädjerika sköna!
Jag hälsar Dig, vänaste land uppå jord,
Din sol, Din himmel, Dina ängder gröna,
Din sol, Din himmel, Dina ängder gröna.

2
Du tronar på minnen från fornstora dar,
då ärat Ditt namn flög över jorden.
Jag vet att Du är och Du blir vad du var.
Ja, jag vill leva jag vill dö i Norden,
Ja, jag vill leva jag vill dö i Norden.

3

Sweden's national anthem is pretty gay, and not that patriotic either.

It says "I want to live and die in the Nordic" not Sweden.. :|

My homeland
My homeland
Glory and beauty
Sublimity and prettiness
Are in your hills
Life and deliverance
Pleasure and hope
Are in your atmosphere
Will I see you?
Safe and comfortable
Sound and honored
Will I see you?
In your eminence
Reaching the stars
My homeland
My homeland

The youth will not get tired
Their goal is your independence
Or they die
We will drink from death
But we will not be slaves to our enemies
We do not want
An eternal humiliation
Nor a miserable life
We do not want
But we will return
Our great glory
My homeland
My homeland

The sword and the pen
Are our symbols
Not talking nor quarreling
Our glory and covenant
And a duty to fulfill it
Shake us
Our honor
Is an honorable cause
A raised flag
O, your beauty
In your eminence
Victorious over your enemies
My homeland
My homeland

Post it anyway. I'm talking to a communist on MSN, so it would be fun to post the american national anthem to tease him. ;)

okey dokey...

The Star-Spangled Banner

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Here goes. It's the national anthem of Finland. Didn't know it had this many, um, chapters or those things with numbers  We usually sing only the first one. And maybe the last one.
I really like our anthem.

1.Oi maamme, Suomi, synnyinmaa,
soi, sana kultainen!
Ei laaksoa, ei kukkulaa,
ei vettä rantaa rakkaampaa,
kuin kotimaa tää pohjoinen,
maa kallis isien!

2 On maamme köyhä, siksi jää,
jos kultaa kaivannet
Sen vieras kyllä hylkäjää,
mut meille kallein maa on tää,
sen salot, saaret, manteret,
ne meist on kultaiset.

3 Ovatpa meille rakkahat
koskemme kuohuineen,
ikuisten honkain huminat,
täht'yömme, kesät kirkkahat,
kaikk'kuvineen ja lauluineen
mi painui sydämeen.

4 Täss auroin, miekoin, miettehin
isämme sotivat,
kun päivä piili pilvihin
tai loisti onnen paistehin,
täss Suomen kansan vaikeimmat
he vaivat kokivat.

5 Tään kansan taistelut ken voi
ne kertoella, ken?
Kun sota laaksoissamme soi,
ja halla näläntuskan toi,
ken mittasi sen hurmehen
ja kärsimykset sen?

6 Täss on sen veri virrannut
hyväksi meidänkin,
täss iloaan on nauttinut
ja murheitansa huokaillut
se kansa, jolle muinaisin
kuormamme pantihin.

7 Tääll' olo meill on verraton
ja kaikki suotuisaa,
vaikk onni mikä tulkohon,
maa isänmaa se meillä on.
Mi maailmass on armaampaa
ja mikä kalliimpaa?

8 Ja tässä, täss' on tämä maa,
sen näkee silmämme.
me kättä voimme ojentaa
ja vettä rantaa osoittaa
ja sanoa: kas tuoss' on se,
maa armas isäimme.

9 Jos loistoon meitä saatettais
vaikk' kultapilvihin,
mis itkien ei huoattais,
vaan tärkein riemun sielu sais,
ois tähän köyhäänkotihin
halumme kuitenkin.

10 Totuuden, runon kotimaa
maa tuhatjärvinen
miss' elämämme suojan saa,
sa muistojen, sa toivon maa,
ain ollos, onnes tyytyen,
vapaa ja iloinen.

11 Sun kukoistukses kuorestaan
kerrankin puhkeaa,
viel lempemme saa nousemaan
sun toivos, riemus loistossaan,
ja kerran, laulus synnyinmaa
korkeemman kaiun saa.

I'll try to find one.

Here: Maamme (Our Land)
Looks very lame. The first and last chapter.

Our Land
(translation by Clement Burbank Shaw)

Our land, our land, our fatherland,
Sound loud, O name of worth!
No mount that meets the heaven's band,
No hidden vale, no wavewashed strand,
Is loved, as is our native North,
Our own forefathers' earth.

Thy blossom, in the bud laid low,
Yet ripened shall upspring.
See! From our love once more shall grow
Thy light, thy joy, thy hope, thy glow!
And clearer yet one day shall ring
The song our land shall sing.

This is the first and second parts of the Swedish anthem, I know, it's a crappy translation(anyone know the word for "värnaste"). Someone care to translate the other parts?

1
You old, you free, You mountain high North
You silent, You happyful beauty
I greet you, ???? land upon earth,
Your sun, your sky, your meadows green.
Your sun, your sky, your meadows green.

2
You keep in memories of ancientgreat days,
when ful of glory your name flew around the earth
I know that you are and you will become what you was
Yes, I want to live I want to die in the North,
Yes, I want to live I want to die in the North,

That's the spirit of pretty much all the arabs (and muslims I guess).
the poet is actually not Iraqi, he is palestinian.

I should have said arabs, they all seem very racist. It is like they won't even consider accepting the help of anyone that isn't arab.

Erm... yeah. Before someone else says anything I must warn you that you're about to be flamed to hell because people all accross the world think the USA have waaaay too much pride.

Just thought I'd tell you.... doesnt really bother me....

EDIT: :p started....

well, consider that the (ancient) japanese kill themselves if they lose in battle or something.

We will atleast accept help from other countries, nice generalizing you pussy.

I will take it, people think the US has too much pride either because they are jealous of us or they don't pay much attention to the middle east.

eh? are americans supposed to have great pride? I thought otherwise.

I doubt you have met all that many then...

I have had many muslim/arab friends and wait for it...

shock horror!! They are actually no different to anyone else! :O

It is mixed. I know people that hate the US and think it is complete crap and that the government is out to get them, they also want to move to Canada because they think the economy is so much better there and that weed is legal. I know other people that love this country, but they are super patriotic, like that won't denounce everything from another country.

That was ment to be a joke, but if you felt attacked, I'm sorry. I know that almost all americans are very nice(I know quite a lot), but you are saying that all arabs are racist and shuts themself in. Isn't that generalizing ?

I have some arab friends too(one is really, really, really gay) and they mostly distrust the US and think there are all sorts of conpsiracies. But they aren't as bad as the radicals in the middle east(atleast that is the impression I get).

Didn't mean to say all, just meant the ones that do.

eh well, it IS true that Arabs have so much pride. dude, for us, dignity is above life.
I don't feel bad when somebody tells me we have so much pride.

Well, I will feel bad for you then. I just don't understand why the Iraqi resistance fighters are still around. My only guess would be is that they were brainwashed by Saddam inot hating Americans. That or they distrust any occupying army, no matter what the reason is.

Most people say that the US has too much pride because:

1. They are jealous.... its true.

2. They are right....

Heh... Now I dont care remember...but I do believe that a large part of the US is waaaaay too patriotic for its own good.

Its rediculous when you compare it to the UK. I mean I don't know one person I could rely upon to recite our national anthem... We have to pledge.... hell I bet people couldnt even draw our flag right......

We hate our government. Yes... all people from the UK hate the government. (I like to think it keeps them on their toes actually..)

We don't trust the government...

Compare that to America where it seems at times to be the complete oposite...

Oh and you tend to find that weaker countries are more patriotic. Probably encouraged by their governments actually... Well yeah... the USA is an exception and therefore stands out more.

Well thats what I think anyway. I'll take any of it back if you prove otherwise. I would love to know what people think....

/thread hijack!

It is different in Minnesota I guess, not much pride up here. People know the pledge because we say it in school every Wednesday(schools attempt at trying to be patriotic...looks good for the administration I guess). No one really knows our whole anthem either, unless they are a big sports fan. There are a lot of people that don't trust out government...just because they are the government, but I hear most of them are in the South, even though I know a lot of people who won't trust anything related to the government.

Well there you have it. Everything said in this thread is based upon steriotypes isnt it :p Just as it allways is....

I mean.. many people here see Americans as being highly conservative proud and uneducated.

Which I know is obviously a Steriotype!

Btw.... I hate steriotypes... They make so many people so hatefull.
