new expansions

Do you think Valve would create/aid in the creation of an expansion pack alla Blue Shift, Opposing Force, Decay but set in the Half life 2 time frame under the control of maybe Barney again, a Resistance soldier, Chell, Shepard (return?) or someone new/

ideas?

I'd sure like more OP4, but it would be difficult to justify in the current state of affairs. On the other side, Blue Shift 2 (Metro Cop chronicles? ) would be a more plausible option.

Valve has alluded to a 4th episode, and they well may not be developing it (it may be confirmed as by a 3rd party actually, I'm not sure).

I don't think they'll produce an expansion pack. If an expansion pack is produced, it will be produced by a third party.

I do believe, however, that they'll create a fourth "episode", similar to an expansion pack, but probably stand alone.

But then, I'm not entirely sure. Who knows what goes on inside Valve's head :/

But if you make an expansion set in the Half-Life 2 timeframe, you cant interact with Gordon Freeman. It should be set in the week where Alyx and gordon are in the slow teleport. I have got a few ideas for an expansion pack somewhere, I will go and look for them. Also, I think we should introduce another new character to the Half-Life world to play. I would like a co op game like Decay, instead set around the events of
Half-Life 2. Maybe playing two metrocops.

And vortigaunts are quite different from antlions. They actually have their own consciousness and their own social lives and the like. Ant lions, from what I can tell are just bugs.

Yeah, social lives was a bad example to pick. But you knew what I meant.

It was the simplicity behind them I was getting at. Playing as a bug isn't quite the same thing, because bugs don't think in similar terms to you so you can't relate. Gordon Freeman, being human, you can relate to. So when you think, you think like a human, and thus you're much closer to Gordon or ol' Adrian than an Antlion.

Yup, I know exactly what you meant, I was just biatching around being over-specific.

Something like that happened to me when playing Alien vs. Predator 2. When playing the Predator I was like "hey, this dude is cool", in the Alien part I thought "WTF!?", but when playing the Marine part, knowing what a human can and can't do and how we have to rely on science to protect ourselves (weapons, armors, etc), I was really into the character, my heart pounding in the most intense and creepy parts of the game.

Gearbox wouldn't do it. They have no reason to: they're a big league company now, not a small startup under Valve's wing. Plus their staff or mostly versed in Unreal technology rather than Source. Valve large enough to do it themselves, especially the way they keep swallowing up their associate Third-Parties.

The Alternate Perspective expansions were a smart creative idea and an interesting piece of business ingenuity, but I don't think we'll see them again. If Valve were hot on the idea, we would have seen it by now. If they pick up the characters from the expansions, they won't do it for their own sakes - they'll do it because X idea needs a main character, and this character they have laying around in the attic is good enough. They won't do a 'Opposing Force 2' to solve mysteries and tie up loose ends. Because there aren't any for one - Gearbox made them self-contained and their only asset as a sequel is a brand familiarity, something that Valve doesn't really need to worry about anyway.

I don't think Portal is really the same kind of expansion as OP4 or Blueshift.

Also, I don't think there's enough scope for an expansion following a different viewpoint:
Metro cops would run around C17 hitting people. Great.
Combine Soldiers/Elites would only shoot stuff, and you wouldn't really gain much from that I don't believe. Even if you were one in the citadel and learnt about what went on there, it's all blown up now anyway.

Controlling a stalker/antlion/zombie/manhack/vort/any other enemy would be limited I reckon. Playing an ally like Barney or Alyx wouldn't really differ from being Gordon in my opinion, and wouldn't fill you in on the story that much either.

I'd prefer to get Ep3 or whatever is coming next that bit sooner rather than go over covered ground (to an extent) Story wise, progress could be made whilst inadvertantly filling gaps, rather than just filling gaps as someone else.

Ooo... how about an expantion pack that plays like mgs: po. you build your army from citizans in a different, but near city 17 (in the range of 15-19). each rebel has different skills, (ie. marksmanship, engineering, medical)
