Newb Question

I just bought HL2 and installed with no problems but when I go to play it goes to the Valve screen then a black screen with some white words at the bottom, but when it gets to the next screen the game stops responding. The screen looks like a blurry street or something and says loading at the bottom, but when I check in windows it says it isnt responding and when I close HL2, the message I get is HL2.exe has stopped responding...etc. I tried to do a selective start up, disabled all virus scans, that thing but still nothing. System side I am runng P4 2.8 w/ HT, 1024 ram, GeForce 6600 with updated drivers, so i don't think it could be that. Hopefully someone can help me, thanks for your time

That's the dynamic background that is being loaded. You can disable this by doing this (there is another way, but I don't know that one):

1. Go to "Play Games"
2. Rightclick on "Half-Life 2"
3. Select "Properties"
4. Click on "Launch options"
5. Type "-console" without the marks
6. Press "OK"

Try loading HL2 now

Ok, that worked and i played all monday. When i got back on monday night steam told me i have a 1600 min patch and thats not happening on 56k haha. So i uninstalled everything and started over, everything went normal until i started to play now even with -console it is going to a black screen and not responding or a blurry screen but this time it dosent say loading, im not sure, i have reinstalled like 3 times now and it is getting so annoying.

well, when a game is loading I believe the program is not responsive, How long did you let it load for?

Thanks insane. Been trying to figure out how to do that for a while now. Can't stand waiting for a menu to load and then waiting for the game to load.

What's your computers specifications?

If you only have 256 mb Ram or something, that might cause long loading times

takes 2min + for new game loads

takes 40sec ~ 1minute 10sec for loading between maps


tested with 256mb RAM, 1.7 ghz CPU. (my laptop)

It only takes me a coulple of seconds to start the game, and same when loading through game loading points.. and i have 1024 mb ram, along with an amd atlon 3200+ and a 256 mb 16x pci-x radeon x700pro

Before i had 1.3 ghz, 256 mb ram and Geforce4 MX440...it took awhile to load the dynamic background, about 3-4 min...and loadings in the game 2-4 min(aproxx)
