I have just started reading the book 1984 which was written by George Orwell and published in 1949. He wrote it about what he thought the future would be like in the hands of a breen-like figure called 'big brother'. It takes place in london in a post-world-war-2 world where our every move is recorded by cameras. There is an organisation that watches us day and night and their headquarters is at the top of a monstrous, collosal building at the centre of London. (citadel anyone?) The tower is guarded by armed guards with guns and metal truncheons. (overwatch soldiers?)
People are not allowed to call each other by name, but instead when talking they must call each other 'comrade'. There is also a sinister force called the Thought police (civil protection?) working for 'big brother' and if you are suspected of rebeling they will hunt you down and kill you covering it up like you never existed. There are huge 'telescreens' everywhere, broadcasting the face of big brother with the motto 'big brother is watching you!'.
Although the big brother organisation has many child followers because chldren are easily impressionable and many would turn in their own parents to the thought police if they suspected them. Many young people are part of the Anti-sex league, a league to stop... (well, I think you know what) like the supression field?

There are many other similarities, and i'm sorry if I haven't written this very well as i'm not much of a writer and I just wanted to post my thoughts on the matter. Perhaps Valve based city seventeen off this book? It really is a great book and I recommend it for you all. ;)

here is the wikipedia article on it:

Well, no shit.

And everybody wears overalls too, notice that? I wonder about this obscure book called 1984...

It's a well known fact that HL2 borrows a lot of elements from 1984. The atmosphere is very similar.

Nearly every science fiction story stole something from 1984. Hell, even 1984 stole from 1984.

sorry, I guess I've just never come across any 1984 threads before.

It's rather like coming into a scifi forum and wondering about this film you saw called Star Wars, dude.

1984 is a really famous book. In fact, such a society as described in HL2 and 1984 are sometimes described as "Orwellian".

They should make a "modern" movie out of 1984. I saw the old one, it's pretty good for it's time..

I don't think 1984 would make a good film. Then again, I haven't seen the existing 1984 film.

We watched the old one in English last year. Decent movie, exceptfrom what I remember Julia had freakin afro-pubes down south
