I bought HL2 collectors edition today, installed it, restarted, and launched steam. I get an error, which I will post screen shots of if needed that says I cannot connect to the steam servers. I've been working on everything from disabling all forms of firewalls and disabling everything running but steam and it still won't connect.

If I put in the wrong password it tells me the password is incorrect, but when I put in the right one it says it cannot connect.

When steam first opened it updated itself. It downloaded to 31%, blinked, and finished. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling steam with no results.

If ANYONE can help AT ALL. Please reply here or email me at [email protected].

This is really starting to drive me insane. It's officially been 6 hours since I first installed the whole game. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the entire thing with no different results.

I need help badly before I blow a freaken vessle. Thank you in advance

HAve you tried deleting the ClientRegistry.blob file? It's located in the Steam folder. Close Steam and delete it, then restart Steam and it will regenerate it. A number of Steam problems are caused by that file. If you're apprehensive about deleting it, just try moving it out of the folder.

I will try the blob thing next.

I tried everything. Direct connect gave the same error.

XP firewall off. TrendMicro firewall off.

Set up a static IP and opened ports for "steam" as reccomended by portfowarding.

running out of patience

2 Firewalls :Z

Ok, it's a firewall or a router issue. Trust me on this.

windows XP has a built in firewall that's been off on my PC for 2 years.

TrendMicro has a firewall that has been on while I play EverQuest, Battlefield Vietnam, and Call of Duty. I disabled it and left the program before opening steam... still nothing.

I've tried the help system from valve and no response. I'm activating my forum account there now so I can see if anyone in the community can help.

I've also tried DIRECTLY CONNECTING FROM MY MODEM TO MY PC.

I've had problems too. Following silly suggestions from the 10-12 year olds here, also deleted "clientregistry.blob", resulting in a new 1 1/2 hour wait for "updating". Yikes.

Have you tried switching off peer guardian ?
I had the same kinda problem as you but when I switch off peer guardian it workd!!!

Try it, if you have it
