Just watched the first two seasons of this show. What I can't figure out is what year it is supposed to be set in. They are using typewriters and film cameras, but then a tc1100 tablet PC (made in 2003) shows up in season 2. There are a few lap tops scattered around too. Anybody know? It is bugging me.

the typewriters and outdated equipment is a result of a poorly funded, maintained and equipped police department. you'll see more on this later, evident in more than a few places and not just the baltimore police department.

the wire is post-9/11, around 2001/2 i think. it's not officially said... i don't think.

I'm pretty sure Jimmy's brother in Season 1 mentions Homeland Security, and anyway makes it clear that the FBI's priorities are now on terrorism. He may even explicitly reference 9/11. Anyway yeah it's underfunding.

If only they had their iPads. They could have solved MULTIPLE crimes at once!

Oh wait...

Anyway keep watching Dan. Beautiful show.

yeah that's what i was basing my guess on, and at some point i think he does offhandedly say ''after 9/11'' or something about ''the towers'' (not referring to the high risers in west baltimore that are also often referred to as towers by the detail(s) ) but i'm not sure.

do you mean brother as in bro, or actually brother? fitzhugh from the feds is just a friend.

What the ****. I thought he was actually his brother!

i got the bro thing off the bat as just being bro/friend/pal/old bud, how did people get the brother thing? fitz doesn't have that same irish bawltymoor tone, and doesn't slip up with his english accent every now and again :P

I swear to god he says "my brother" quite earnestly when he talks to Kima (?). Have to watch it again.

yeah, he does at a few points but i just took that just as his characters way of referring to people.

maybe i've watched the wire way too much. either way, he isn't listed as his brother anywhere.

Blegh. The show seemed to try and get across the point that he was his flesh and blood brother, and so that's what I thought all along.

MY WORLD IS CRASHING DOWN AROUND ME!

i think there were more important things that the show was trying to get across :P
