There have been heaps of topics about this, this one for example: http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=69165

Anyway, the Combine are not human, but when they invaded Earth they built a human/transhuman force to keep Earth under control. I think that the metrocops are just human volunteers, but most of the other Combine soldiers are transhuman.

Questions like that get asked a lot. So, here I go again:

Combine: They're a mixture of all the races they've conquered throughout the universe. Earth is their latest target. When the Combine conquers a race, they'll work to assimilate it, and it's planet's resources. Conquered races are usually enhanced with Combine Technology.
Overwatch: Soldiers, Prisonguards, Elites. They're humans enhanced with Combine technology. E.g. mechanical parts.
Civil Protection: The Metrocops. They are humans that willingly join the Combine. They don't get mechanical implants.
Stalkers: Weak humans are turned into Stalkers. They're the slaves we see in the Citadel.
Synths: They're another race that the Combine has previously conquered. They include Striders, Gunships, Dropships and so on. Just like the Overwatch, the Synths are also enhanced with Combine tech.
Real Combine: The original Combine race has now become very dependant on it's own technology, and have become fat and grublike. You see a real Combine on Dr. Breen's screen. That is the Combine Advisor.

None of that is very in-depth. It's just a very basic overview of each of the known Combine factions.

^^and that explains why there is no fat people in the game :E

and why there are no female combine troops :p

You can also see a fully modelled & animated Combine Advisor if you have the Source SDK. It's viewable in the Model viewer. You can also play it's animations from here as well.

You see a combine (big white slug) on one of the rides to Breen's office

There is actualy no real evidence to support ther fact that gunships and striders are synths. Though it is in my peronal belif that they are a derivative of synthe technology combined with other techs (combine energy weapons for example)

I'm pretty sure Raising the Bar, and the Strategy guide both state that they are, but I do admit, there's a lot of variation from the original species that they were forcefully evolved from.

Angry Lawyer said it. Raising the Bar. Forceful evolution. :)

You only see the Combine Advisor twice in the game. First when Lamarr stuffs the teleporter and you appear in Breen's office, and second at the end of the game, Breen's talking to it about getting a host body and delivering Earth etc. I think Duncan's talking about the Crab and Mortar synths, the things that are being transported on the conveyor belts.

Synths aren't really one specific race. They're a bunch of seperate races that have the forced evolution thing as a common trait.

The mortar synths, striders, dropships, gunships, type 2 scanners and the similar creatures are all classified as synths.

In some ways, the overwatch could be considered the first stage of a human-synth. The elites were originally going to have a synth-like appearance, but they changed them to a more human design as an artistic choice.

Synths

Synths were created or forcefully evolved and modified from the Combine from different races the Combine had conquered.

They contain both mechanical and biological parts and can fire and have enhanced performance from mechanical parts while being as flexible as a biological creature and oprating on a rudimentary intelligence of it's own and basic 'don't attack the Combine, they are your masters.' programming.

Yes, the Synths are made up of a lot of species (e.g. Striders, Gunships etc), and I think all the Synths came from the same planet/world. That would explain their similarities (e.g. beige skin). Raising the Bar also states that the Synths were "conquered and enslaved by the Combine". That obviously gives us a hint that all the Synths come from the same world.

The Overwatch gets mechanical implants. They don't evolve. I don't think they can be considered as Synths, since they don't come from the "Synth homeworld", nor do they "forcefully evolve", nor do they look like Synths. They're humanoid.

Perhaps the overwatch are the human equivalent of synths?
Yeah, the Combine seem to do the same thing to everything they conquer: "Enhance it with their technology."

What if the Combine Advisor is actually really small, like maggot sized. Would be an interesting twist :)
