i just wanna know whether my PC is good enough for mapping for source based games. Herez the spec.

AMD sempron 2.6, 512 mb physical memory,GeForce FX 5700 with 128 mb video memory,80 gb hard drive.

any computer that can run source is good enough for mapping.

I don't know what you were expecting by posting this thread. Performance optimization techniques? If it runs too slow for you, then I guess you can't run it. End of story? I personally don't know anything you could do to make it run faster...

Hammer is particularly unintensive on your CPU - memory can get to be an issue if you're using a lot of textures. As for compiling - that always uses 100% of your CPU, regardless of what it is.

close anything else running...
you could buy more ram and set the pagefile to be twice that much (so 1gb RAM, 2gb pagefile). often helps. but then the cpu would be the holdup...

Hammer tends to eat up the better of my 1.5 gigs of ram. More ram would be recommended. I think pagefiling wouldnt help a whole lot either because pagefiling is used for data that the cpu doesn't currently need, but might need soon. Hammer needs all of the data pretty much the whole time.

so a memory upgrade would be fine, right??thx 4 the advice mate.

yes, more RAM is a good idea. Hammer is very memory-intensive. also, don't run anything else while hammer is running, to give it more resources.

That couldn't be further from the truth.

Like others have said, and I said in another thread, you need a lot of memory for level design work. I had a hell of a lot of problems on large levels with 1gb, I upgraded to 1.5gb and found some improvements, but still some problems.

2gb seems to have sorted me out fine for now.

Bah, I often run Alias Maya, HL2: DM, Hammer, and a browser window with about 12 tabs, but my PC is rather new (C2D@3ghz, 7950gx2, 2gb DDR2 ram, Raptor, etc)

well your post isn't really helpful, now is it, Spoudazo? Go be the big shot somewhere else.

But Kester is right: 2Gb for Hammer is very recommended.

Well someone made the blanket statment not to run anything else, I'm just giving an example that that is it relative to ones hardware.:cheese:
