A limited nuclear weapons exchange between Pakistan and India using their current arsenals could create a near-global ozone hole, triggering human health problems and wreaking environmental havoc for at least a decade, according to a study led by the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The computer-modeling study showed a nuclear war between the two countries involving 50 Hiroshima-sized nuclear devices on each side would cause massive urban fires and loft as much as 5 million metric tons of soot about 50 miles into the stratosphere, said CU-Boulder Research Associate Michael Mills, chief study author. The soot would absorb enough solar radiation to heat surrounding gases, setting in motion a series of chemical reactions that would break down the stratospheric ozone layer protecting Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, said Mills.

i'm not too happy about this. you?

wouldn't 50 nukes destroy the planet? Either way, our time has come, might as well let us brown people start.
*runs to futuristic underground city

Where's your god now jverne?

Not happy about this at all, frankly.

I'm not angry. Just...disappointed.

Wait, why would you be unhappy or disappointed? It hasn't actually happened you know.

What is there to worry about? Even if there's a nuclear war the Rapture will happen first.

"Study shows that nuclear war is bad."

Face it. Its inevitable that humans destroy the planet. It's really a matter of time. It just takes a few people, in the case of nuclear technology. There are many people in power, (and not in power, but are striving for it) in this world that are trying to destroy it for religious reasons.

I don't think that humans will ever completely die out though. at least not that easily. Not until the sun burns out or something. We are too clever and too many.

Underground refuge with artificial life support FTW.

I'm optimistic that if the russians and americans managed to avoid destroying each other then india and pakistan would be able to do the same.

We are however, as a species at a deciding point in our success, if we can master the planet and resources without resorting to war we will continue to flourish.

I like this comment.

It's not India and Pakistan that I'm worried about though.

I don't know, I've heard it more than once. Though I really don't know how, kinda puzzled myself and assumed it to somehow be true.

Haha, I have heard people say it, thought you may have some facts :p

That wasn't a religious war though - religion has been found to be an exceedingly good reason for doing just this sort of thing.

Bullshit. I hate it when people say "it is inevitable that humans blow themselves and the planet up".

Its not.

Actually saw that family guy episode where all the nukes go off on Y2K and you see from space that the continents are cracking and shit.

If enough nuclear weapons were detonated within the same timeframe, they could have serious effects on the planet's climate - fallout would be a huge problem (it doesn't just evaporate) and the planet could experience nuclear winter due to the mass dissolution of particles into the atmosphere. The world isn't going to explode in a chain reaction or anything of that nature no matter how many nukes you detonate on the surface, but it could be rendered temporarily inhospitable which could effectively wipe out the human race.

Remember, a nuclear war could ruin your whole day for 10 years!

fixt

anyway, pakistan almost witnessed a "radical" revolt and things are still hot down there. ught let's not even talk about India, their silly music videos are more than a reason to get nuked.

it's the wacos that i'm worried about, china and USA would probably never use nukes, they have too much benefit from each other.

Gotcha =]

Just know that a guy back in High School claimed that if another X amount of Nukes were set off the world would end. In the right context he was kind of right :p

Damn Science always teaching us things we'd be happier being ignorant about :hmph:

atleast we willbecome mutants eating each other in awsome adventures

I s'pose at the fact that nuclear war, or war itself, proves that war isn't even worth the effort to meet the goals or ends, which would be peace obviously, but there are better solutions.
