Five South Dakota lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require any adult 21 or older to buy a firearm “sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defense.”

The bill, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2012, would give people six months to acquire a firearm after turning 21. The provision does not apply to people who are barred from owning a firearm.

the real reason why they're doing this:

The measure is known as an act “to provide for an individual mandate to adult citizens to provide for the self defense of themselves and others.

Rep. Hal Wick, R-Sioux Falls, is sponsoring the bill and knows it will be killed. But he said he is introducing it to prove a point that the federal health care reform mandate passed last year is unconstitutional.

“Do I or the other cosponsors believe that the State of South Dakota can require citizens to buy firearms? Of course not. But at the same time, we do not believe the federal government can order every citizen to buy health insurance,” he said

retarded. your political process has been hijacked by people who are retarded

I was just gonna ask I wonder how these idiots feel about the healthcare mendate. But I see, they are doing this to prove a point about mendates being unconstitutional. Yeah, makes total sense.

Although I actually do agree with the point, if the federal government has the constitutional right to force us to buy private insurance then they also have a constitutional right to do this should they decide to.

Like this is a new approach to politics in the United States? Every political process in every country is run by retards, it's just that the retards in this country have the most guns. For every 100 citizens there's somewhere around 90 guns and it won't change because killing shit is ingrained in our past like a tick. This is such an obvious catalyst for the tea party too. Half the people in this country couldn't find China on a map yet there's suddenly an abundance of twisted patriotism based on an obsolete amendment that let's us continue to kill and imprison ourselves faster and longer than any other country on earth.

No, the system was never hijacked...it didn't need to be. The moment slave owners decreed that all "men" are created equal this country was destined for crime, poverty, private prisons, paid off judges, foreign policy (aka operation bomb the brown people)...it's all just a sweaty diarrhea filled baseball cap that we're told to wear with pride.

When did you become such a leftist hippie? I'm liking it.

this isnt true. in canada this sort of thing doesnt happen with anywhere near the frequency it does in the US. where polticians appeal to a specific demographic with overblown knee jerk bill writing over something that anybody in their right mind can see is a good idea. in fact canadian politicians are so unlike their american counterparts that they're starting to take notice and emulate them. knee jerk partisan politics is a relatively recent phenomenom in the US; it wasnt the case (not to this extent) 20 years ago

Yup, in the 70s it was Nixon that proposed much stronger healthcare legislation than anything Obama even suggested.

In the 80s Reagan wouldn't stand a chance on the republican ticket:

Now Obama might not engage in a lot of knee jerk idiotic positions, but this country continues to move further to the right with Obama helping with that shift.

If you guys want to know why we have such a ****ed up system it's because the game is rigged against moderates. The way the electoral college works, only two parties can ever get the power they need to stay on the ballot, and two parties always means the extremes.

In Texas, and most other states, you have to have gotten 7% for your party last election to get on this ballot, or a 250,000 signature petition.

New Hampshire is mulling over "approval-voting" legislation, but a state that small isn't going to mean shit in the national elections.

I'd love a moderate party, but that isn't ever, ever going to happen in the States. Not without a total shift in the political climate, and not just left or right but rather towards ease-of-access.

But you think the problem is really moderates? What does moderate mean exactly? Because our system is what our media and most people would call moderate. Moderate in the sense that giving out trillions of dollars to banks with no strings attached is moderate. Attach some strings and you are a far left socialist. Don't give out the money at all? You are a far right nut job.

I don't think the issue is so much being a moderate but the issue is with what policy issues we concentrate on in this country. Just look at the healthcare debate for example. The entire issue was watered down to wanting to kill grandma vs not wanting to kill grandma. The media is certainly to blame. But so is the fact we don't have publically financed elections. Dumbing down the discourse is how politicians get their money to be re-elected. So I think those 2 issues alone are far more damaging to our democracy than the lack of "moderates".

Haha, I'm not sure really. It's been a slow transition unfortunately as I was brought up with the notion that this is the greatest country in the world but never really put any thought into it until college. It's amazing what facts and logic can do to one's political alignment.

You're absolutely right, that remark was meant to be taken as more of a tongue in cheek reaction but it still holds truth to a degree. It's interesting to compare the US with canada though, and sad as well. Take Toronto for example...One of the most ethnically diverse cities around yet the murder rate was somewhere around 80 as of 2006 yet Chicago had over 450 the same year. Sure, there are many variables involved but it's clear that race SHOULDN'T be causing the problem, something the US tends to use as a scapegoat for it's shitty policies. But the media has done nothing but widen the barrier separating race in the process which in turn creates a never ending cycle of violence. Christ, I've actively been looking for an episode of 48 Hours in which the suspect has not been a black male. I've yet to come across one. And yes, the 24/7 propaganda machine is helping to obfuscate the system to the point where sensible legislation cannot even be proposed, let alone passed. Something is very wrong with the country when congress finds it necessary to read the constitution aloud to remind each other what the hell they are supposed to be doing.

It pisses me off that blaming the likes of FOX news and others has become a cliche and readily dismissed when in fact its part of the problem. I'm not suggesting MSNBC is much better but they have to fight dog shit with more dog shit.

2006 was the year of the gun in toronto. that number was higher than the average. usually between 40-60 murders per year with about 1/3rd involving firearms; the majority of which are gang related. and I know americans dont want to hear this but it's because of ease of access to guns. toronto is statistically comparable to chicago in any other crime except for homicide by firearm

I would be fine with this if it were an analogy made in a speech or something, but haha look at us making a point oh wait we're actually spending time that could be used to make real legislation to make a joke law that could actually happen haha.

Not that it even matters, because the point becomes moot when you realize the government forces its citizens to do things all the time. Including buying stuff.

Why do we even need a government? Let's throw stuff and tip over cars like our egyptian brothers.

If you think the Democratic party is extreme left wing you're a ****ing moron.

This is almost as bad as gov't telling us we can't eat junk food any more. **** you gov't if i want to die when i'm 30 from a massive heart attack, by god i will!

also you didnt read past the title in the OP:

so now they will arrest people whitout firearms?

A state lawmaker from Marietta is sponsoring a bill that seeks to do away with Georgia driver's licenses.
...
In his bill, Franklin states, "Free people have a common law and constitutional right to travel on the roads and highways that are provided by their government for that purpose. Licensing of drivers cannot be required of free people, because taking on the restrictions of a license requires the surrender of an inalienable right."

Franklin told CBS Atlanta News that driver's licenses are a throw back to oppressive times. “Agents of the state demanding your papers," he said. "We’re getting that way here.”

yup full of retards

Oooh, look mommy! Ad hominem!

I never said they're the far left wing, and for the most part neither are Republican politicians. The fact is, with only two parties, there will always be polarizing forces and moderate solutions to big problems are usually left out of the thinking because people could never get support enough from either side to push a moderate bill through. "Bipartisan" support is a god-damn joke.

Most of the absolutely insane rhetoric we see is from the news, the majority of congressmen are far more moderate, and there are multiple caucuses within both the House and Senate of Republicans and Democrats that are not even close to the party lines. Yeah, they're introducing this ridiculous bill, if only to prove a point. Much of the US is up in arms about the Healthcare bill. I'm not surprised that no one posted it, but a District Court judge ruled against the healthcare bill using Obama's own words against him. It's neither surprising nor harmful to see these sorts of bills introduced. Anyone who thinks they're wasting time hasn't ever taken an American Government course. State legislatures waste more time than you would think is even possible.

What does our government force us to buy? Car insurance? The federal government doesn't do that, the state government does. And nobody is actually forced to buy car insurance, you only need to do so if you want to drive on public roads. That is in no way comparable to what the healthcare bill did, which requires anyone living to buy insurance no matter what or be penalized for it.

I don't agree with that. The news is certainly part of the problem, but politicians not only play right in to that on purpose they actively promote it. Because without conflict there would be no reason to give money to politicians. So I don't think that people in congress or the senate for the most part are moderates, they are simply career politicians that will whore out their values to the highest bidder just so they can keep their comfy jobs which come with all sorts of rewards.

Well, they'd be moderates if they weren't too busy whoring themselves out to the highest bidder. FFFFFUUUUCCCKKKK private campaign funding. As fascinating as political systems are, the politicians make it all turn to shit.

Yeah, I guess that all depends on what your definition of moderate is. Because what most people consider moderate in this country is actually the problem.
