Sarah Palin said:
this Statue of Liberty was gifted to us by foreign leaders, really as a warning to us, it was a warning to us to stay unique and to stay exceptional from other countries. Certainly not to go down the path of other countries that adopted socialist policies”

this was from sept 2010. today she wrote something similiar:

Lady Liberty is the symbol of unity and friendship we have with other freedom-loving nations. It's also a "warning" of sorts, as France encouraged us to keep democracy alive as the recipient of this gift... basically telling us not to blow it. Thank you for this reminder, France!"

I'm still waiting for the day when she'll make sense

also; Sarah Palin 2014. because you know she'll be hella entertaining as she send america to hell in a handbasket

Implying there's anything at all to fear from France.

it would pretty awesome if a 1000 french soldiers poured out of the feet right as they were laying the last foundation stone!

"jojojo we have caught zee americans with der pants down, echs-penseeve champagne for everyone !!!"

It would be even more awesome if 1000 french troops poured out of the statue today, having hidden dormant for 125 years, holding off their attack until someone came along and started making the statue something to be feared, making it all the easier for their surprise attack to deliver a deadly blow.

Palin is half right. In the 19th century European nations would fight perpetual wars, invading countries and stealing their resources, and abuse the civil liberties of it's citizens. America however is a shining city upon a hill, which opposses imperialism and upholds the rights of all mankind...

I want to make a movie out of this.

What is zees? We are on, how you say, island? Those damn snooty Americans, zey know swimming is too close to bathing for uz to ever do!

The Statue of Liberty is really a Decepticon.

"... Starring Jack Black!"

Jack Black: EW NEEEEEW, AH HEEV FARTEEEEHD EEN DEH STEHCHEW!!

Lil Jon: SAY QUOI???

There is no way to read that in a way that would remind me of Jack Black...

However I don't know how anyone can support someone who isn't intelligent enough to remember the same five talking points she repeats every single day of her life. Hell Joe Biden does better than that and most of the time doesn't even seem to be aware of his location or what he's doing... I'm just really glad she has no actual role in government right now. I don't even think Alaska wants her around.

But the USA is the product of imperialism, and does nothing but outright support further imperialism, and has does so since its inception.

the closest we ever got to imperialism was the Phillipines. We also leave democracies behind in our defeated foes, an empire would use puppet kings/autocrats. Ask Japan how much of an imperialist we really are. Shit, we were very friendly when the French were killing their king. The British meanwhile were sacrificing hundreds of thousands to install the Bourbons again. This was also back when we had NO army, NO navy and were very threatened by Brit douchebags

Nothing bad ever happened from a little imperialism. Maka-the-world go round...

shouldnt she be hating the frenchs for not supporting the war on iraq?

bawhaha I would advise you read up the US's role in South America in the 1970's.

There's also the salt water fallacy, why is it only imperialism, if it's overseas, what was the conquest of the western united states?

What's so bad about imperialism? All it does is prove we're a real world power.

Because proving you're a real world power really means nothing more than being able to beat up or intimidate another country.

Imagine that nation-states are actually children, roughly eight years old, where the world is their schoolyard and the UN is the teacher who can't physically break up any fights due to her bureaucratic job requirements. It becomes glaringly obvious how childish politics often is at every possible level. Governments and children posture and lie for the exact same reasons - to shirk responsibility and facilitate self-profit - and they do so wantonly.

"I didn't HIT him, I POKED him, and then he punched me!"

"We're not INVADERS, we're PROTECTORS, and now some people are attacking us!"

Really not all that different.

Yeah, because it's not really easy to miss sarcasm in completely normal text and there's no precedent for stupid misinformed people on the internet. Stigmata must be so dumb to have thought you were serious.

/facepalm

Scotland is some advanced imperialism not seperated by water. North Ireland is imperialism that you appear to have no problem with so whateva bruddah. As for the american west, that was a long drawn out process with Natives who were very fond of raiding, especially the frontier settlements. Congress didnt want to continue watching massacres of homesteads and could not stop them from going there so what happened is they were pushed away again and again. Today they are on reservations that Congress has no real authority on, doesnt make the laws, cant stop them from pursuing activities illegal in the state they are located in(although Im sure the Drug War has made a mess of the situation as it usually does)

What I mostly object to is the notion that we are merely a continuation of European colonial practices, were not. We especially werent at the start, as the Napoleonic Wars showed.

The US did take a wrong turn around Cold War era, intent on making people weak and economically fragile, as if that would stop communism. We are still not an empire, not just because we dont profit of the misery but also how little intervention we really use

/facepalm

Scotland is some advanced imperialism not seperated by water.

The Scottish Parliment voted to join an act of union with England in 1707, a Scottish king was put on the English throne in 1606.
Anyway I never claimed Engalnd was an exceptional country. If you bother to read my origonal post

It goes without saying the nations of Europe were imperialist. The notion that America was bettter than Europe, the so called 'shining city upon a hill' is not really true. Europe did some terrible things and the worst excesses of Europe are worse than the worst excesses of America, but America certainly did things that are beyond the pale by today's standards and were definitely imperialist.

North Ireland is imperialism that you appear to have no problem with so whateva bruddah.

Firstly it is across salt-water so it's traditional imperialism, secondly I live there. Thridly I never claimed in England was a special country.

How exactly does the Napoloenic wars show, the US isn't imperialist?

During the napoleonic wars, the US tried to annex Canada, and shortly after the Napoloenic wars annexed Florida by force from Spain.

The US did take a wrong turn around Cold War era, intent on making people weak and economically fragile, as if that would stop communism. We are still not an empire, not just because we dont profit of the misery but also how little intervention we really use

I'm amazed how rose tinted America is about it's history.

Scottish being secondary to being related to the English King, their meddling was endless and I doubt the union was paved with good intentions

No, our society is not based on subjugating many people to the few, it is about assimilating and enfranchising them. Whether everyone was in the spirit of it at the time or now is irrelevant, as from the slaves on up, they had to eventually get equality, the very basis of our republic guarantees it, regardless of whether the populace at large likes the group in question or how much money is involved.

Didnt say it wasnt, in fact I would hazard a guess it is the northern part of the island of Ireland, I was merely digging at your damnation of proto-imperialism while REAL, present imperialism is going on right there

lol lol lol lol

War of the First Coalition, US ships supplied many tons of grain to the French Republic, this was stopped when Napoleon started thinking he was worth kingship at which point all we did was buy land for a low price. The point? That we dont just play sides for gain but have a genuine interest in democracy. Also this shows how seperate we were from England, who was trying to destroy democracy so their dumbass cousin could rule over many poorly, making us not connected to the European nobility/empire machine in the least.

Compare us with USSR at the end of WW2, totally preeminent but they subjugated while we left stable, powerful states in our wake, even forgoing the basic disarmament protocol inherent when one state so totally conquers the other, the Soviets just stayed and made the occupied countries to server theirs, against many basic Soviet precepts. They were an empire, we were not

Have you ever heard of "cultural imperialism"?

The economics prosperty of the union, give rise too the Scottish enlightenment; John Hume, James Watt and Adam Smith.

Poor people were still treated like shit, but they were treated like shit in America too.

The French republics have similar lofty ideals, their wars in North African and Indochina were however still imperialist. Actions are more imporatns than ideals that weren't followed.

uhh what?

So becuase of that, the seminole wars and the war of 1812 weren't imperialisitc. The British empire forcibly stopped the slave trade in Africa, does that mean the British empire wasn't imperialist?

Compare America with the British empire (who also took part in the war btw), the post war policies were identical.

Its not our fault much of the damn world took to rap/ gangsta music like a fish to sewage. In fact almost all of the last hundred years has been based on American lifestyle. Japan has a similar influence though not as large, in spite of not being an empire at all presently. Their asinine kawaii culture is all over the place

Our fault really. Anime is a result of traditional Japanese culture being injected by Western media.

Unlike grammar problems, which Bush had because he didn't use a teleprompter, Sarah Palin's mistakes are unfathomable. Does she just get nervous around the press, or is she really this "out there"?

Either way, she's hilarious. I want her to become president because America needs more laughter.
