Shocking conspiracy!

I can add to this thread somewhat by stateing that my physics teacher worked for NASA and other huge organisations. (He knows his stuff)

And when I asked him what he believed he said he didnt know enough to make any decision either way. :)


I am hovering arround the same place really. I can't find sufficient explanations anywhere. :(
 
Does the fact that separate human cultures all over the world, without contacting each other... developed a notion of a god not make you think?

I'm not religious, but I disagree with saying that Christians still go around saying the Solar System revolves around the sun and torturing people.

Religion and the people pratising religion are two COMPLETELY seperate things in my opinion.

Thats something I think most people seem to miss.

Yes, that is quite interesting. In fact, whats really surprising is that they all worshiped god in similar ways. You guys should read or watch some of the documentaries by Erich von Däniken. Really good stuff.
 
i know that niether can be proved, thats absolutly right.

but i am leaning towards not beliving, as for all the reliogions, most of them are different, the large ones are large because they forced there religion upon captured settlements, anyway religion is there in olden times to explain anyhting they couldn't with there primitive knolege and so they have an excuse for having a set of rules, every culture needs rules and religion is the perfect way to enforce them, i dont think the people who made reliogions actually belived there was a real god, but then again, maybe they did :P

besides, dont be a lemming, discoverys are made by poeople who think outside the box, so to speak.

I don't know what I belive. But I am smart enough to realise that just because people did stupid things in the past they will do them today and tomorrow.
 
dinosaurs do prove the bible is wrong.

what christians say is that the bible isn't literate, but metaphorical, what i'm saying is thats just an excuse.

EDIT: John: Maybe it does, maybe it doesent. I read somewhere that the 7 thing in Bible can also mean 7 millenia or something in its orriginal language.

I never said that Christians run around torturing people and such, the point im raising is that the people of that religion at that time did that to keep their religion alive. The point im trying to get across is that people of the religion will do whatever it takes to keep the religion alive. Galelio's situation was only an example. Thats the exact same thing they do nowdays, BUT Im not talkin about torturing people im talkin about adapting new discoveries to their religion to try to make it more plausible. Maybe i worded it wrong, hope that clears it up :P.
 
Its funny how the bible tottaly ignores the dinosaurs exist, and we know they did.

So if god created earth and the first inhabitants were a few animals and adam+eve then what happened to the few hundred million years with and without dinosaurs before humans? lol - the bibles a friggin joke.

Yes it is the common excuse among theologians Ive debated with is that those billions of years took place during those supposed 7 days that God created the world in. Well its kind of obvious what the big contradiction is here so im not even gonna say it :P

It still proves that its a sham made up by man who, very much like David Blaine, is a few screws loose.

Christianitys becoming more and more unpopular. Before you know it, within the next 100 years I'd say, theyll be spicing up old chapters - I can see it now.

In the garden of eden adam and steve curl up in the flower bushes while adam and eve argue over teenage sex - eve just wont give her flower up - while all this is going on Shaq (our stereotypical black man) is creating the first spliff.

People need to get a hobby and stop investing in religion.

Oh yea forgot this part of your post :P. Well people just make up gods to explain what they dont understand, the greeks did it-they had a god for everything. They had a god for fire, lightning..etc. What keeps us from believing in those gods? We used science to see how those worked right? We figured out that there isnt someone standing in the clouds throwing lighting rods down on us. But one thing we cant explain is what happens after death, something we just naturally fear-this is where major religions come in. But I think we pay too much attention to death instead of life.

I'm sorry, but people don't do things 'to keep religion alive' they do it becuase they believe that what the person is saying is actually blasphemous. Anyway... "adapting new discoveries to their religion to try and make it more plausible" is a very wrong statement, but I'm off to bed now, I'll talk to the forum in the morning :P if you're lucky..

Religion is the basis for many cultures morrals and law systems.
If religion never existed then we would most likely be skrewed over in nuclear war by now lol.

Also. It must be hard to imagine how people feel when you insult their religion. So I'll give you an example:

God is often the most important part of alot of peoples lives. Often on the same scale as their parrents/brothers/sisters and other family members.
How would you feel if someone started insulting your closest family and calling them stupid and not worthy of existing.

The point being. Dont be so damn unthoughtfull!

Not wanting to get stuck in this debate (is i love to watch tohers debate religion) but i believe that in Job (i tihnk its the book of the bible) there is mention of creatures that fit well with the description of dinosaurs.

Im not saying dinos didnt exist, im just saying i dont think that it was all millions of years ago.

WHen i was younger i used to really thinkt hat the world was only 20000 years old, but i know that isnt true. However i dont think that its millions of years. It seems that when scientists date things, they get it pretty accurate up to 100,000 or so, but after that is spirals off into millions and billions.

To give an example: A person i know took a certain rock and seperated it into peices. He sent each piece to a different group of people who deal with dating on stuff. With the rock he asked if they could date it, he also gave a date that he felt the rock my be. However, with each pice, the date was different. When the results came back, they all gave similar looking dates to what he had first suggested.

Does this mean they got it wrong? Or perhaps its just they were to lazy to bother doing it.

(By the way, this isnt just a mte from collage, he is actually a friend of a man i know but i know him as well. He does geology (That is the one with rocks right?))


mchammer...i doubt we would even have nuclear weapons if there was no religion or something similar. Religion has brought people together in groups and allowed them to work together...How many people followed kings because they were chose by the divine being?

I dont understand how it is a wrong statement, you didnt state anything to argue against that. My prove is that when we discovered dinosaurs, Christianity actually adopted the idea and said it was hidden as a metaphor within the bible. Not only that but over time scriptures have been thrown out because of unimportance...hmm I wonder why...
 
I think its very unlikely anyone on this thread knows enought to comment on anything with any real credibility. No-One would.

Just thought I would make that point.
There is no definate proof either way.




Anyway: Christians would argue that they didnt just say it was a hidden metaphor as an excuse but because it was actually just hidden to everyone because know one would have understood or belived without the scientific proof that came later on.
Try and see the arguement from both sides. It helps alot when forming opinions and trying to work out facts. :)

Thaat is true, many things that can be somewhat valuable is found in some religions. But again there is also things that can harm people in religions. Look at this quote from the bible:
"Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. But all the young girla who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."
(Numbers 31. 17-18)

Thats pretty odd for a religion who promotes goodness and honor isnt it?
Not only that but they keep you from having personal freedom, which i hate so much. Not allowing me to think for myself, to question the world around me is a disrespectful slap on the human mind.

And I don't like the way they sometimes try to close your mind to everything else in reigions. But remember, its the people practising the religion that do that. Not the God you believe in. I personally have yet to see god affect any of the decisions I have ever made in my life.

I think that if they want someone to join a religion they shouldent insult other religions or athiests in the process. People should choose their beliefes through informed opinions not brainwashing :P

I agree there could very well be a god above us creating all of this, but their is no prove backing up anything the religions of today. Maybe the religions just misrepresent it. Maybe the universe is self-governing. Maybe like in the hinduistic believes, we are all god playing a game of hide and go seek with ourselves intil shiva dances the terrible dance of death and the whole universe is ingulfed in flames. But for the time being Im athiest, Im just really curious to see what happens after death...makes suicide sound fun :P.
 
I too am very very currious to see what happens after death. But to be perfectly honest I would never risk it.

Well there is many parts in the bible that has God directly commanding killings and slaughters heres some exerpts. I'll give you the pages and all that so you can look these up:

He demanded and sactioned human sacrifices (Leviticus 21. 28-29; Judges 11. 29-40; Samuel 21. 1-9). He killed the first bron of every Egyptian family (Exodus 12. 29). He sactioned slavery (Exodus 21. 2-6; Leviticus 25. 44-46) and the selling of one's daughter (Exodus 21.7). He commanded the killing of witches (Exodus 22.18), death by heresy (Exodus 22.20), death for violating the sabbath (Exodus 31. 14-15), death for cursing one's parents (Leviticus 20.9), death for adultery (Leviticus 20.10), death for blasphemy (Leviticus 24.16), and death by stoning for unchasity at the time of marriage-a penalty imposed only upon women (Deuteronomy 22. 20-21).

Thats pretty crazy for a religion that says God will forgive for sins but then commands their death once they have done these doesnt it??

Obviously it doesnt prove anything else except that it had to be based on a real person and real experiences. Even if they were based on a high with some new mushrooms! :P

Well thats easily explainable, people made up beliefs for things they cant understand. Just like i said in a previous post, people make up religion to explain things they cant understand. Thats why the greeks had gods for lightning, fire,..etc. But we know now that fire isnt created from some mystical god, also we know now that there isnt a god in the clouds throwing lightning rods down upon us. Science has explained those, but we still dont know what happens after death. People were eager to except religions in those days, especially christianity. Think of it this way: it was easy enough for the commoner to understand and practice it. Unlike other religions of those days it wasnt the richest go to the goodie place after death, it was if you live by these principles you go to the goodie place. Now if your poor, a slave..etc. your automatically going to adopt this, especially those living in such a supersticious age.

EDIT: Also it didnt mean they had to sacrifice alot, it wasnt something that they had to cling on too or become obsessively dedicated too.

Just for the record the earth is about 4.5 billions of years old, and the whole universe is just 15-20 billions of years old.
 
that is very true, also:

your a cave man and your village is in choas because of civil disorder do you,

1.invent a religion that is easy to exept and puts down social rule and explains things that scare you

OR

2.continue as it is and let it sort itself out.


cave men needed reliogion, we dont. Besides, religious wars have killed more poeple than anything

Because right now it seems that the atheiest arguement is being driven forward by everyone except me and purhaps a few others who are trying to argue both ways to try and find out somethin new for ourselves. :)

Hey! I know a shit load about religion, as you can tell from my exerpts. Ive actually studied the main eastern religions such as buddhism, hinduism, taoism...etc. I also learned quite a few things about it over the last few years of studing philsophy. I was also a christian at one time and aruged with athiests...so i kinda take that as a insult lol. But anyways later im about to go also. Fun debate.
