I've been wanting to make one of those shooter (Galaga, space invaders etc) games for years now, but it only occurred to me last night that I could make it as a Source Mod. I believe it would be fairly simple, most work being on coding. The only complicated thing I see is that I would like to switch the valid target periodically. For example, you start off being able to attack ground targets, then it switches to air, back to ground and so on. How many months of my life would this eat up? Where should I start?

PS: Here is what I have in mind: http://boggle.worldwinner.com/images/games/BlackhawkStrikerScreenshot.jpg
PPS: What are the chances people would actually be interested and like to try it out? (ie. bother downloading it)

I'm sure it's possible. I don't know the specifics, but the source engine is a very versatile engine...

Plus, if you made that, I would ABSOLUTELY check it out. Old-school shooters ftmfw! :D

I've been reading the Source Developer Wiki, and it seems to be very possible. :) The only thing I'm still not clear on, is if it'd be possible to restrain the players view (overhead, straight down, moving foward slowly) while the plane is actually controllable. I didn't find much on this subject. :( Would memebers of other mod teams be willing to help if I contacted them? (I imagine members of the FPS/RTS hybrids would be helpful here)

that would be amazing...i was also thinking of a game like sonic...in 2d...with source engine....but you need a lot of coding...

Its very possible to restrict mouse movement and player movement.

You would have to make it third person, then have the camera always at a certain angle.

i've been thinking/hoping someone would remake Return Fire into source some day.. it kinda looks like the screenshot you posted. So yea, it would be cool, and of course it's possible in source.. :)

I absolutely love this type of game. If mod like it was released I'd download it for sure.

I think I'm going to go ahead and start initial research/development etc. I'm pretty encouraged by what I've looked at so far. :)
