I've played through Half-Life 1 again and I was thinking, perhaps snarks are biological weapons developed by the Controllers.

Evidence For:
  • Their entire lives consist of trying to attack something for a few seconds, then exploding
  • They don't attack aGrunts or Vortigaunts (ignorance of this resulted in one of my many untimely demises)
  • The snark trip mines things found in 1 level (can't remember the chapter)

Evidence Against:
  • Snarks are never used by aGrunts, Vortigaunts or Controllers
  • They are only even in the same area as these things if you use them or if you lour them to the aforementioned snark trip mines

On a side note, what the hell is this thing?
This screenshot is from Opposing Force but that map is the same as the one at the start of Half-Life (when you get teleported during the resonance cascade) and that thing is there too.

It appears to be some kind of amoebea creature...a single cell organism or summat like that...
Anyway, I like the idea, though the evidence against makes me strongly disbelave it.

Those damned controllers, what won't they mess with?

Your theory has a high possibility. The snarks' suicidal attack seems like something that would be programmed into it rather than the creature willfully detonating itself. I've always liked this theory myself too...I figure somewhere down the line the controllers were screwing around with snarks and made them behave in this manner.

One thing is though that snark nests seem to be naturally-occuring. They're scattered across the facility and Xen, in places where controllers aren't. In fact it's my opinion that snarks and gargantuas are related, and on Xen I've caught a nest of snarks inside a gargantua's cave. No controllers were present in that place. It doesn't make any sense for them to put them there, either. That's strong evidence against.

As for the amoeba...no idea. I'm going to assume it's a living thing, though.

It's not the Hunter sythn !!1!eleven!!

Acctually, they are probably just enslaved, like the Vortigaunts. Like stated, why else would they commint suicide trying kill?

Maybe they dont' do it on purpose. Like... human pheromones cause their hearts to beat so fast they explode, or something.

I doubt gargs and snarks are related. I'd say gargs are weapons, created like the grunts but snarks might have had there evolution manipulated.

Snarks and Gargs are probably related, but no more closely than Vortigaunts and Grunts, or Humans and Monkeys. They do have some physical similarities, but they are clearly different species.

Wasn't nihilanth the alien in charge though not the controllers?

"Slaves...we are their slaves...we are"

Edit: The model name is protozoa. I didn't realise it was it at first as in the model viewer the see-through areas show up as black. So that's another thing to add to the list of Xen wildlife, giant, flying amebas.

The controllers built the Nihilanth. They followed him, but he was made by them. Loopy, ain't it?

Ah so the controllers did it all? I never knew that. So excuse my naiveness, but are the controllers related at all to the combine? Since I know the Combine were never on Xen, but did they have any relationship to the controllers?

Dr. Breen's "vast, meterological intelligences"?. Perhaps it's a young'un.
