I don't know if you all know this, but I can fix the crash in the preload (by crash I mean the pre-load stops and can't continue untill you cancel everything and start over):

1. Exit steam.
2. Go to ....Steam\SteamApps (with explorer).
3. Move "base source shared materials.gcf" and "base source shared sounds.gcf" to an other directory.
4. Start Steam and go to HL2 preload status.

If everything went fine, steam sais HL2 preload is at 0%.

5. Start HL2 preload; If it works, cancel it again and exit steam. If the steam server is too busy, say ok and exit steam.
6. Move "base source shared materials.gcf" and "base source shared sounds.gcf" back to ....Steam\SteamApps.
7. Start Steam again and go to HL2 preload.

If everything went fine, the HL2 preload is back at the ammount of % from when it crashed.

10. Press continue.

Hopefully it continues! :smoking:

(If it really work with you all, maybe a mod could make this a sticky.)

another way is to delete the client registry.blob and then restore it form the trash can on your desktop.

all you have to do is hit pause then continue.
That's the problem, that doesn't work...

Oh... I didn't know that. Well everyone, use his fix, it's way easier.

I can confirm that this method works great - just tried it and bingo.

You have to pause and restart after you restore the file though!

Well everyone, you heard it, never mind me. I suck at finding solutions.... *snif*

Dont sweat it man - I was about to try your suggestion but a shorter, quicker one appeared :)

We appreciate your efforts anyways!

It's amazing because whenever there's a problem with steam, deleting the blob file always fixes it. It's the solution to everything hehe.

Uhh.. I just used "Exit & Logout" and then reconnected again.. worked fine..
