Some new screenshots

Always nice to see the typical lemming type behaviour rearing up its head; flame a fellow board member for being mildly critical and top it off by accusing him of posting a beta pic which is actually a screengrab of last year's pre-E3 trailer (the Media Player window is too obscure a hint, obviously).
Disappointing as well to see not one of the multitude of moderators around here step in.

As for the shots - been there seen that.
Quite why everyone is getting so worked up over them is puzzling, for they show over-familiar footage in an over-familiar level of quality.
I find HL2's style very attractive, but there are still things I'd like to see improved, the generic placeholder look of distant buildings for one.

Thank you very much, Greg. :)

The game looks alot better than I thought, actually. This sort of refreshed my flame for HL2. :D

Well I dunno why he/she got banned showing that image, its from a very early video, who banned him/her?

From what I've heard this guy say earlier, I'm guessing that he's just bending the truth. He just put that pic there for not so many people have seen it, and even if them have, it would be perfect for a "betapic".

The antlions look more fierce/agressive this time aswell, nice to see some changes made.

no, he changed it. there were 3 images posted. now only one.

He's a clever one, ain't he. I'm surprised he hasn't been warned at least.

In the meantime, those shots were awesome enough that I completely missed the reflection and clipping problems until they were pointed out.

Is this what the game looks like with anti-aliasing on?
Because it's like 10 times better than previous screens.
The distant objects aren't jagged anymore, for starters. :)

Very nice, I like the screen with the revolver much. Thank you very much Greg.

an out right banning would be in order. he clearly only signed up to post them. and in a thread where a valve employee had given us proper screenshots. and he nit picked the screens posted. :hmph:

anyway, the new screens are awsome. i hope that we are nearing the end to our wait. :D

The higher you set your personal standards, the harder it is to be pleased.

I find these shots really sweet, like most people in this thread so far, simply means im gonna be personaly knocked out of my seat with amazement when i play the game, if that means im easily pleased.. then ignorance is bliss !

Whats wrong with nitpicking those screenshots? They're very pretty, but not deserving of the orgasmic level of attention given here.

I agree with some of P4's comments, in game I probably wouldn't notice too much, but as a screenie to be critisised (for that was surely the reason for posting them), there is much to fault.

Looks great!

But I wonder though, in the chopper screenshot, entities/moving stuff (bullet trails, water splashes, some stuff in the background) doesn't seem to be reflected in the water, but I've seen many screenshots and moving videos where they were reflected. Why these inconsitencies Valve? :)

As already stated in this thread, when somebody (don't remember his name right now) was at a visit to Valve, he asked the same question why certain objects wasn't reflected in the water. The guy from Valve pulled down the console and entered a simple command, poof, everything was reflected.

It's just a matter of selection.

I think Valve has some tricks up their sleeve and they wanna save some really cool shit for when the game actually comes out.

Hate to agree, but... agreed.

LMFAO!! thats cracking me the hell up! I mean, for this guy to actually do a screeny during the movie, post it in a paint program and circle something that looks shitty in the movie with 'wow' its no wonder he got banned..

I cannot stop laughing at how rediculous that is.. haha!

He posted some beta pics then removed them.

Repeat: He posted some beta pics then removed them.

What's with all the extreme spread on the mg's in all the media we've seen? That heli gunner must be drunk.

it wouldnt be any fun if he drilled you with every shot and you died would it
maybe if you but the settings on hard or impossible

Fantastic pics, and lovely to see some AA eventually ;)

Correct me if I`m wrong.. I`m not a gfx wizzy, but isnt ATI`s strong side the pixel shaders and not AA? And since Valve is "working" with ATI it would`nt it make more sence if they used PS instead of AA? As I said correct me if I`m wrong and sorry for the off-topic question.. Just wondered when Abom brought it up.

I like the G-Man ASCII

and the bird is nice too.

Screenshots look awesome to me, I need to play this game.

I don't know about their PS capabilities, but ATi has excellent AA strength... at least on par with nVidia's capabilities, if not usually better. ATi also has their temporal AA method.

About the reflection in the third pic , don't forget that when Eat Fresh visited Valve and was shown a level , he asked the guy who was playing why the trees don't reflect on the water , so the Valve guy brought down the console and wrote a command that enabled the reflections.

The same situation is very likely in this screenshots , they just disabled it for some reason.
Hmm...
I guess the shaders have to be enabled seperately.
One shader reflects the bsp renderer and the other which is disabled for some reason, must reflect the entities...
but why is the entity reflection disabled?
Maybe it has one of the bugs that has to be squashed...

Im sad, because these screenshots make me want to play the game so MUCH.

Hope i'm not turning this into a "will my comp work" post, but are you talking of the high-end x800 and the xt cards, or also the "older" 9600-9800 pro cards? And what about AF? (not that I know what it does or anything besides that it is a got thing) I have always avoided both (AA & AF) since I thought it was a "bad" thing for my 9800 pro card.. Stupid friend of mine giving me false info :hmph:

Their architecture hasn't been upgraded hugely for the x800 series of cards, so they're basically a much faster version of the 9800 series... meaning that yes, your 9800/9600 Pro will still have fantastic AA/AF support. Heh, hit your friend for me - AA and AF are far from 'bad'. I don't know where I'd be without them, but it would probably involve alot of jagged edges and blurred textures *shudder*
