There's a new Steam Beta client available. To access the Beta, go to File -> Settings, and on the Account tab will be a drop down. Select Steam Client Candidate, and then allow Steam to restart itself. Here are the specific changes:
  • Added support for registering CD keys that do not contain any games
  • Added support for running an external process when Verifying or Deleting a game

Last time I tried out one of these, none of the steam games worked until I got rid of it.

Wonder what goodies Valve has for us?

What would be cool, is if a game is on Steam you own on CD Retail, is to put the Serial Key in and have access to download and use it on Steam.

Not sure how it would be secure but would beat having CDs.

It would be cool, yes, but without an agreement between Valve and the publisher this is quite impossibile. You know, money, regional restrictions, money, money, distribution politics, money, money, and so on.

In addition, there's keygens fo rgames out there, and there'd be dozens of people out there using them to get free games on steam.

As already said above if you know how to use your scroll wheel, the general consensus is that Valve are providing 'early access' codes for L4D so some people can give it a sample prior to launch. This will allow users to register version of the game which will probably expire before release and is primarily focused on providing press reviews to hype things up just before release :)
