Steam doesnt connect after latest update

I haven't used Steam for a few weeks so when I opened it up there was an update waiting - no surprises there. After it had downloaded steam restarted itself but then claimed that I was offline. Even though it's never been a problem before, I checked Norton to try turning if off but it wasnt on anyway. Ive restarted the PC but the same problem comes up - "Could not connect to the steam network."

It's always run well up until now.. what should I try?

So... can you actually log in to Steam? It may be that the servers are busy and it's having a problem connecting you - it's been happening to me frequently. I mean, you can open Steam and launch a game, yes?

If not, the update may be blocking Steam through a firewall or similar. Try the troubleshooting at steampowered.com - lots of useful connectivity tips there.

Make sure you're connected to the internet, it can often be a problem. Or reinstalling Steam.

Well, the problem wasn't that Norton was opened but that it was closed. After trying to connect again with Norton running a message popped up asking if it should allow steam, as they do. Now that Norton's running and able to accept Steam it's connecting properly again.

So while Norton is closed, it is still disabling some programs net connections. I assume that'll be lifted when Norton expires or if we want to stop using it.. :/

Norton is probably, as you said, working behind the scenes blocking your games.

Uninstall Norton and remove all traces of it from your computer.

Norton does seem like a bitch. Whats a good alternative? I was recommended AVG once...

I was about to recommend AVG myself

It's free, little hassle. The only problem I've found with it is completeing the scan, it minimizes my Games :hmph:

I currently have absolutely zero viruses on my computer. Know what I use? Common sense. No antivirus proggys installed- and I look at a lot of porn, download a lot of shit, but I don't go opening suspicious emails or spend too much time on suspicious websites.

Point is, anti-virus software is bulky, memory hogging "airport security".
