I think various questions about this has come up, but not exactly. My question is...I already chose to receive halflife2 through steam (I bought a 9800xt) I entered my keycode and everything and will see it on available games list once its available. However, once in a while I re-format my hardrives because they get a lot of junk on them and I like starting with a clean slate for performance reasons. If I already have halflife2 on my hardrive from steam in the near future and then re-format my hardrive. Will I be able to re-install/download it on my new formatted hardrive?? please someone have the answer on this...I searched all on steam boards and nobody had this question

aslong as u keep ur user account on steam, remember the password etc, then u can redownload it from that account as many times as you like.

I'm pretty sure that the game is tied to your keycode, so that if you need to reinstall it just verifies your code and you're good to go. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

You are both pretty much right on. The account you first set up with Steam contains all the data for anything you purchased. When you re-install Steam, you will be able to redownload anything you've already purchased without needing to even put a CD Key back in. It will take a minute or so and verify all the data and then start downloading. I've already tested this with CZ, it worked perfectly. Another thing I love about Steam is the fact that you don't need to put in the stupid CD just to play your favorite games. The only thing I don't like about Steam is when Friends goes down and I can't find my friends as easy. Fear not you will never have to enter a code again, never have to worry about a patch, never have to worry about having the CD in the drive.

In other words, information about the games you have purchased is stored at Valve's end.

This is why Steam seems very risky to me.

its much more conveniant to have the CD's or DVD's next to your computer.

oh well, ill let others try the first baby steps in Gaming downloads over steam before i commit myself to using it.

Maybe for Hl3

I think it's very good HL2 is only going to work for steam. Not only the system is much better it's also a lot more stylish than normal WON system. And style is the most important thing these days. I mean, when HL2 comes out and the box looks like "shit", I doubt people will be interested. But when you add steam to it and a stylish design the gamers will drawn to the game like vultures on a rotting corpse.

You don't see Steam when you buy the game in stores. Also, there are a lot more concerns than whether a backend looks pretty or not whether I agree with them or not.

and much more risky for valve, besides if some thing goes wrong you can email or fax them a picture of your jewl case, im sure.

If Valve don't back up the user database daily, I'll eat my hat.

if you dont have HL, open HL and when it asks for a CD key use that one, if you DO which i bet you do, i think you have to wait until HL2 is on the list.

steam game download...

Ok, I feel much better knowing that you can reload the game down on your computer again. However, I am not one to do this, but for valves protection what is stopping someone to go to friends house and download steam and the game on their computer??? maybe you need to enter the key we got from ati again??? perhaps steam will only allow you to be logged in at one location at a time with the unique cd-key, but they are suppose to be adding offline play as well, so how is valve going to handle this??? I just dont want valve screwed from other people, but I am glad I can download it again if I reformat or get new hardrives, just as though I had cd's that I will reinstall again. Kind of eases peoples fears for getting the steam only version for that comfort for having the cd....well steam will download it to ya when you need it.

The cd-key is bound to an account. Only one instance of the account can be logged in at a time.

Its gonna work JUST like it works now,
every CD key is binded a account, so you wont have to enter the key again, and you can only be logged in one location now anyway.

whoa, my internet must have lagged, fusion beat me :rolling:

thanks....

Thanks all for your information and feedback, its nice to get feedback on questions where in many cases you get ignored. Thanks again

Well, the way it works, is that anywhere you login with your Steam account, you can download and play HL2. Thing is, if you're not logged in with that account, it won't work.

And you can't be logged in at more than one place at a time. So, you go to your friend's house, install Steam, and load on HL2 from Steam, and due to the clever tech in Steam which allows you to start the game with only what you absolutly need downloaded, you can be in-game in minutes.

Then, you go home and can login and play. At your friend's house, if Steam is still logged in, when you login at home, it invalidates the login and your friend's house, and locks him out from playing any of the games until he can login again.
