I didn't see a thread to stick this in anywhere... but...

Last time I was playing Half-Life 2 I realized that you can harm Striders with normal grenades. Many times before I have tried tossing them up in the air and getting them to explode on the Strider, and while I have been successful, the Striders didn't appear to take any damage.

However if you will all recall that Strider that surprises you in the tunnel...

Now normally, you aren't supposed to have enough ammo to take this guy down on your own and are meant to work your way up to the third floor and use the rocket crate to destroy the Strider. (Might be possible actually, but I never seem to have enough rockets, plasma shots, or MP7 grenades) If you stand in the entrance to the building and let scanners spot you, the Strider will come over and crouch down. When its crouched you can chuck grenades underneath it... and when they go boom, the Strider will take damage.

If you can hit the strider with all three rockets, and any Plasma Shots and MP7 Grenades you might have... then you can finish it off with two or three normal grenades. This makes working your way up the building very easy.

Haha.

Cool, I'll have to try that next time a play that part.

Wow, interesting, yet very unecessary peice of info.
Nice find. :)

WooT! Unnessecary INFO!

Awesome find.

I'm not sure whether plasma balls damage it... i remember that all explosions from the player damage striders and gunships (not sure about exploding barrels, will test if can be bothered, which i can't :)) but meh.

Garry's Mod + Modded RPG + Striders = FUN!

The only thing I care about is that awesome sound when you kill one of 'em. :P

Aren't there set points when the Strider unleashes the alt-fire though? These sequences are scripted...so, does not having the Strider blow holes in the building walls affect your progress up to the top floor?

I will definitely have to try this again now my curiousity is aroused.

Things that affect striders - rocket rounds, alt fire from the mp7, alt fire from the pulse rifle (plasma balls), and possibly normal grenades.

In the final battle where you're in some ruins surrounded by 3 striders, remember how you encounter the first strider on its own, as soon as you enter the area? It's just after a resistance guy tells you you're almost to the citadel gates...If you manage to save a rocket resistance guy/girl from the section before, they'll follow you into this bit and probably die....that'll give you 3 rocket rounds (on top of whatever you already have).

You also get stormed by a few combine elites here, which gives you a fair refill on your pulse cannon alt-fire. To add to that, I think there's also lots of grenade-launcher ammo in crates around there (in the first underground car park type bit). That's more than enough to take down the first strider, if you shoot well. (this is for Hard setting btw, natch :p)

Unfortunately, it means that you're just up against 2 striders in the big shootout at the end, which makes it slightly less intense...I think if I play through again (a fourth time...) then I'll leave it alive...

If you shoot the plasma balls from the generators in the last chapters they damage striders indeed, but i highly doubt they do from the ar_2 rifle. I tried it with the maker of the playable strider mod online, and the health of the strider didnt go down and he didn't know why, so im guessing he didn't change any settings...which leads me to believe its like this in Halflife2 single player as well.

edit: i have used grenades before on striders it works best if you roll them under arm, then pick them up with the manipulator and throw them up at the main body, timing is the key, they need to explode as they travel upwards and just reach the turret up there.

The ar2 plasma ball do damage it, I tested it out with console commands, and it gibs!

The ar_2 being the pulse rifle? I'm almost certain they do damage. You rarely have more than 3 to shoot at a strider, so I've never taken one down with them, but have a look at them to see them smoking and sparking after you hit them with a couple. IIRC I took down that strider I mentioned by using 3 rockets, 2 pulse rifle alt-fires, and one final alt fire from the mp7 (give or take one of each...) I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to take it down if the ar-2 balls didn't have an effect.

I think the pulse rifle's alt-fire is essentially just fires energy balls like the ones in the generators - if you catch one fired by an enemy elite then it looks and acts identical.

Believe it or not, I tried to kill a Strider with a healthkit...:|

Not all there anymore are ya Cremator. Are you still one of those people who think when someone is cremated is when your mouth is filled with cream? God help you (from an atheist hehe)

I tried that and the barrel just went right through it. I haven't tried it yet, but the "Readme" for Half-Life: Substance says that tossing Mines will work.

And: No, destroying this one does not mess anything up.

Interesting note: One of the Striders that appears right after you take down the fourth batch in courtyard is supposed to blow down a wall that exploses some supply crates. If you take him down quickly though that doesn't happen. His blowing open the wall isn't critical to the map though.

The stridermod has edited striders, they can be damaged by pistols or crossbows in that.

I've actually done tests and striders can be damaged by the pulse rifle and sub machine gun, first attacks.

Yes, using tons of impulse 101's, a custom made map for HL2, God, I took down a strider without an RPG, gernades, or secondary attacks.
It takes a VERY VERY VERY VERY VYER VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY LONG TIME.

Without impulse 101, doing this in HL2 Singleplayer Game, it would be impossible as you would never find enough ammo.

**POSSIBLE SPOILER**

Of course plasma balls hurt it, later in the game when your in the citidel you need your gravity gun to shoot the strider with plasma balls to kill it

**POSSIBLE SPOILER**

OKay heres whatcha do.
You wait untill the strider is right above you, make sure you dodge his little spikeh feet. You then climb up one of the legs, using your crowbar like an ice pick to carry your weight up. Once you reach the top, you jump sideways off the leg and onto the cannon, which then you hold onto with one hand and use your crowbar to rip out some vital parts, disabling the strider, which then will start to fall, so make sure you move up quick to the head and ride the thing down. Make sure you jump before you hit the ground or else you'll take some gnarly damage.

Make sure you also record it incase this actualy works, because holy hell would that be amazing :D

What I like doing is jumping on top of them from buildings etc. RPg's are best for taking them down.
