Take Their Weapons!

I was wondering... when you kill a guy you can pick up his weapon with the grav gun, but why can't you take it from him when he's alive?

It's for the same reason you (thankfully) can't rip off their clothes.
Whatever safety mechanism keeps you from grabbing people prevents you from grabbing things attached to them as well, which would have the same adverse effect.

It's because humans emit a field that leaks into the surrounding area. Actually all this theory isn't so far fetched. Apparantly gravity could derive from disruptions in the zero point field - something it's been theorised that humans themselves manipulate.

Why couldn't you pick up weapons in the citadel?

I don't think it's a dumb question. After all, you can do it in the Jedi Knight games with your force pull and it doesn't affect game balance in any way.

In a way it makes sense - you can't pick up a human sized object, so if a human sized object is holding on to a weapon, putting all their weight to it, you can't rip it from them. Of course, it'd make more sense if the soldiers showed some visible sign of struggling with the weapon... imagine if you could pull the gun towards you, the soldier trying to keep hold of it and being dragged along the floor as a consequence. Now that'd be cool

Clothes ripping shouldn't be ingame, otherwise you have a bunch of people chasing alyx around with a gravity gun. Still who wants a gun when you can grab their entire body and use it as a weapon.
