In a surprising turn of events, Valve have revealed the "Two Cities Update", an upcoming Mann vs. Machine focused patch for Team Fortress 2. In a fashion similar to older Team Fortress 2 updates, the patch is being periodically previewed over a series of days, with Day 1 revealing a pair of new maps, a number of new achievements, and weapon effects.

Meet "Mannhattan", one of two of the newest additions to TF2's expansive map roster!

The update's main attraction takes on the form of "Mannhattan" (no, you didn't misread that), a brand new Mann vs. Machine city-themed map set on the East Coast of America. The map sets itself apart from other MvM maps by providing the attacking robot hordes the ability to advance their own spawn points and to introduce new bombs into the map for the first time. It remains to be seen whether the other MvM map set to be revealed on Day 2 of the update will feature these new mechanics or not.

If you're not a fan of Mann vs. Machine, fear not! A new community map known as "Snakewater" is also set to be introduced with the update. Created by Toivo Sawen, this 5 control point map has been regularly featured in the competitive scene for some time now, something which has motivated Valve to include it in this update.

Meet "Snakewater", the other newest addition to the TF2 map list!

The update is also set to introduce what appears to be a brand new scoreboard exclusively for Mann vs. Machine, which, as shown below, provides extremely detailed information on the game-in-progress by informing players of their total damage output, their score, their current money, their tour number, and much more.

Also new in this update are weapon and player effects, both of which can be earned by completing a paid Tour of Duty on both of the new Mann vs. Machine maps. Completing the tour awards the player with a "Killstreak Kit", which can be applied to a weapon of choice to upgrade it to a new "Killstreak Weapon". Extremely lucky players who complete Two Cities Tours may also be awarded with "Australium Weapons", which appear as golden variants of existing weapons. New "Fabricators" and spare parts will also be given to players who complete tours, allowing regular players to craft progressively rarer Killstreak Kits which may add particle effects to weapons or the player character in a manner similar to the infamous Unusual hats which have populated the game since 2010.

Finally, the update is also set to introduced nine new achievements. While the specific details for the nine achievements have yet to be revealed, the city skyline and crane shown in the backgrounds of multiple icons appear to show that four of the achievements will involve the Mannhattan map, while the final five will be exclusive to the Snakewater map. Don't forget to come back tomorrow to learn about Day 2 of the Two Cities update for Team Fortress 2! Until then, be sure to check out the official blog post and announcement page for Day 1 to learn more!

is it wrong to be more excited for the expected comic tie-in than the actual update?

They haven't really done much since MvM failed to impress.

Wonder if they'll disallow Australium Wrenches (or otherwise make the current ones distinct in some way).
