So I was playing an H-L 2 map, and I had made a little fortress from wooden boxes, and as soon as the Combine soldiers realised they couldn't shoot at me through the boxes they tossed a grenade to my position demolishing my box fortress! How cool is that!? It's happened several times before I've made a barricade out of boxes too:afro:

Not really. It's standard stuff that if they can't reach you they'll toss in a grenade to flush you out.

lol thats what AI is.....they will either try to flank you or toss a nade right in there. personally Farcry AI is still one of the best imo. lol and no im not referring to the quote in my sig.

So... it's not AMAZING ai, per se. If they set up fields of fire and flanked you, I'd say it's amazing. As it is, the AI is quite simple.

The AI is amazing, but due to the design in HL2 you don't actually see much of it. Pretty easy to gun down soldiers, so they don't really 'react' so to speak.

The best AI I've seen in the game so far was in Anticitizen One. I had thrown a grenade down through a hole of a tenement buliding floor to flush out a Combine waiting below. I heard him react and I heard the grenade go off, but when I jumped down into the hole, he was nowhere to be seen. So I walked down the hallway a bit and found that he had retreated around a corner and was waiting to ambush me. I know that area well and there's no mistaking that it was the same guy.

Half-Life 2 simulates AI pretty good, as it relies on simple scripting that easily adapts to surroundings rather than elaborate scripted events. And they don't stand out in the open like Far Cry ducks do.

The AI is amazing! You can hold a can in front of you and they won't see you!

But in seriousness, I do like the ai. They get the better of me when I under estimate them.

I remember an awesome Gmod fight that riomhaire or someone else once made versus rebels and combine. The combine dudes with shotties went upfront, the smg guys took cover behind the makeshift obstructions and covered them while the OSPIR combine covered long-range. Awesome.

Yeah, that was an awesome video. Can somebody dig that up?

HL2 AI suck...and farcry's AI suck aswell...

to be honest I've not seen much advances in AI since HL1 that have impressed me.... they give them more options, but they very rarely use these option in any clever way at all...

The AI is pretty basic; take cover + shoot / throw grenades.

I've never had any AI ever try and flank me that wasn't scripted.
The best AI I've ever seen is probably in UT2004.

Sure, it's a fast-paced fragfest... but when the AI is almost as good or even better than human players, it's something special.

Agreed totally. Graphics have come very far but AI is still dumb as rocks.

Lets see you code something better. AI coding is one of the hardest elements of game design to get nailed down, simply because anything thats odd stands out a mile, compared to say, a texture thats the wrong colour.

Given the effect it has on a game, if something significantly better was out there, 2 years ago, do you not thinkthey would ahve used that?

No, they just charge you from the other side of the map. :p

Example? If you're talking gm_construct... :P

I tried it on multiple Counter-Strike maps AND gm_construct. They really adapt to their surroundings and use them to their advantage (if you let them live long enough and don't gun them down with a spawned SWEP).

Far Cry AI is extremely contrived, IIRC. The maps are made so that they now to find cover, etcetera... if you spawn them independently, they tend to suck.

It's quite hard to make AI work properly btw. Now, FEAR had an excellent AI system. It used a context system (like dive through glass, etcetera) to make it work. It's quite hard to explain, and the link explains it much better than me, but simply put the AI... well, read the doc.

It's the same in HL2. There are nodes on the map telling them what is good cover, what is a good flanking route, etc. Some people think of that as cheating, I just see it as part of the AI and the level design (IMO, one of the most important things in a game).

Edit: FEAR's AI, from what I've seen, is about on par with HL2's. They have a few extra tricks, like jumping through windows and knocking over shelfs for cover. But these seem to just be implemented whenever possible, not when it's actually a good idea to do so. Repeatedly I have seen soldiers in FEAR who are in a building, providing them with cover and safe are to reload in, jump out through the window. Not only does this throw away all their cover, but it also means that for a few seconds they are completly vunerable and unable to shoot back.

The number of enemies I've meleed just after they jumped through a window right before my feet is gigantic.

The so-called nodes in Half-Life 2 can be auto-generated by AI on random map. So I still think HL2 rocks.

Damn, I make a spam thread, come back after a day or so, and find it's spiralled out of control!

Dude, I know. :P It's in what I linked to. And as bbson john said before, HL2 AI autoregenerates these things.

I just get redirected to some site about HTTP which doesn't seem to have anything to do with FEAR.

o noes we didnt do what the OP meant the thread for!!!! o noes we discussed instead!!!!

This is prolly the wtfest tactic I've ever seen in HL2:

Soldiers/Metrocops attacking rebels, one of them has to reload, he uses the guy still firing as cover whilst reloading. One of them completely runs out of ammo (after 2 magazines, they do), he stands still, says something along the lines of "out of ammo, providing cover" and becomes a human shield.

Fanaticism, anyone?

D:

South Koreanism more like it. :D

Well, they have the implants... and the brain control...

No, good military tactic.

now thats tactics:D

Okey, so I tested the AI in Gmod the other day...
I spawned a metrocop with a crowbar. I hold an exploding barrel infront of me. The metrocop starts running towards me. He couldn't get pass the exploding barrel, so he hits it with the crowbar. BOOM! Dead...

Now, THATS A.I:P
