Hi, wondering if anyone could help me.

In an old video of Half Life 2 i have there is a minute or so where they are showing the potentials of the halflife 2 universe. Shooting wooden planks, shooting barrels that then bounce down to hit the water and rag dol physics using the gravity gun.

Then it went on to the bieng made of water and the head crab attacking the camera.

ANyone know where i can get a version of this (my original has gone somewhere)

I bought COndition Zero recently and was pleased to find a CD with most of the videos showing Half Life 2 on it however id like to view this one again.

Just another point, why not release that 'practice room' as the demo? It wouldnt leak any story line or hidden surpises it would just give people an idea of the potential and the quality it might run on thier systems.

Anyway thanks for any help/replies you can give me.

this has been said lots of times just after E3, All i wanted to do was lob matresses in the water all day long i would be happy, Alas it never got released :(

I'd think you would be happier without a demo. When HL2 is released, and you start it for the first time, everything is new which is not the case anymore if you have been tossing barrels around for weeks. Anyway, that's what I think of it.

Umm, yup - that's the video alright. He was talking about a playable demo.

And yeah, the whole newness issue is something to think about. I think Max Payne 2 and Deus Ex 2 kinda wore down the physics novelty a bit.

If they released that level on a good engine, we would be able to do crazy stuff crazy people do like get it to run beta maps or use the code to make cheats or what-not.

Valve said they won't release any demos until after the game is out.

i agree... but still ireallly reallly wanna play somthing it looks so f00king cooooll

There's a community made HL1 version of that map, it's an easter egg hunting fury to find all the community memeber's avantar's. We should do some mp of that again sometime.

i definitely agree with the "newness" factor. Starting up hl2 for the very first time, oh the butterflies. Its like a legend now. So much delays help the game in that respect.

That was a good time. :)

wbcheater, I don't have MSN, but I do have AIM, and I'd be more than happy to transfer it to you over that. Or you can PM me your e-mail, and I'll e-mail to ya! :)

That's a really cool level to play.
It is and despite having experienced the physics of Far Cry, Painkiller and Max Payne 2, that techdemo level is still a lot of fun.

The HL2 physics just feels "right". You know? "right!"

Thanks for the replies folks

Why bother only to release demos after the games been released? WOuldnt that cut into starting sales if people cant see what its like in demo form?

Or is it cos 99.9% of people who had half-life will buy Half-Life 2 as well as anyone else who got involved in the hype of the fps in the last 5 years?.

Personally I'd like that demo room just to prat around in, any guesses wether it would be in the game itself (like part of a Hazard course) or if it was a purely E3 demonstration costruct?

I want that DEMO!!! But... Silly Valve is scared of cheaters... :P
The demo won't bring lots of fun, but you can test your Graphics-Card and the processor.
@Mr Fusion: Max Payne 2, Painkiller and HL² use thesame Physics engine!
Here are the games that use the Havok (2) engine:
Brute Force
Deus Ex 2
Freelancer
Half-Life 2
Lord of the Rings: Middle Earth Online
Max Payne 2
Medal of Honor Pacific assault
Painkiller
Pitfall
Psi-Ops
Starcraft Ghost
Starsky and Hutch
Thief: Deadly Shadows

Nuke, they may use the same physics engine, but each implementation is different...

Valve have said there will be a benchmark at some point after E3, and presumably before the release of HL2.

Thats right.
Yes. I figured most people would conclude from my post that HL2's implementation of physics is the best yet (despite it being the same basic thing)

As for releasing demos. They either increase peoples urge to buy a game or decrease it. The bink videos for HL2 give you an awesomely accurate feel of the movement, atmosphere, sounds, animations etc. I think that in itself is reason not to release a demo. Valve KNOW they won't have any problem selling this game, there is virtually no need to release a demo with the amount of hype and excitement towards the game.

UT2004 - 3544 servers, 2968 players
UT2004 demo - 309 servers, 1093 players

I wonder if those people still playing the demo have lost the urge to buy the game because the demo was just "enough" to kill their desire to fork over the $$$.

But, if screenshots and BINK videos aren't enough, if you're REALLY insanely desperate, losing sleep, checking these forums every minute to see if something new was announced etc to get a hands on feel for HL2, like I was, the option is out there.....

yep and its illegal, it cant be much more of a wait by now.
and chances are if you were gonna grab the "leak" you woulda already.

however, Fusion they werent discussing the HL2 leak... they were talking about the level, one of our forum members made a while back that was BASED on the HL2 E3 Techdemo (physics room whatever). It was for the original Half-Life, and had no physics... but was pretty accurate (for HL1 of course) and he hid our avatars all over the place, so it was fun hunting them down.

ohh cool , is there any where i can get that map:)

Why is valve afraid of cheaters? The "beta" is already out... if someone wants to make cheats for it thats what they are going to use. They might as well just release the demo level... but they arn't and thats that.

One of the reasons HL2 was delayed was to change some code so that the beta COULDN'T be used for cheating. So they can't release a demo or they would have the same problem.

if you want the techdemo levels to mess around on , 'cough' leak,, they work well. ignore the rest of the content and just play the techdemo demonstrations. I know a load of people who wont touch the game content and have done exactley that .

A demo wouldn't contain the source code... :|

Gives cheat makers a jumpstart on making cheats, though. Regardless if there is no source, how do you think cheats get made for CS right now?

Exactly. As long as they can bring up the console right?

No, a demo doesn't come with its source code, the source code is the text files that become the demo when they get compiled...

Releasing the demo after the game instead of before shouldn't actually let them lose any sales. If people want to try the game before they buy then they can, it's just that both the game and the demo will already be out.

Releasing it before just means that people play the demo to death and when they start up the full game it all seems to familiar.

I am yet to play a game with physics i have been gne away so long, however if i got back and there was an HL2 demo i soo wouldn't play it, the only possible reason you want the demo is so you can play HL2 a little earlier than it's release. I say wait and it will be so much better.

yeah that level was awesome as well..

but i was talking about the hl2 level and it is awesome.

except for that like the one with the water the glass and gman on camera is broken./

i thought that little bit was incredible, G man looked so life like, the head crab was cool as was how true the camera was. I was blown away....

I agree. When Uplink came out, it was great fun because it was a completely new level in its own right and as I'd been playing Half-Life already, I was already into the groove of it. So 'twas much fun.
Also if you're not sure about buying it, just keep the receipt and take it back if it's no good. Easy.

.....

i dunno that hasnt happened to me before, i played the 'dawnville' demo for call of duty and then got the game....burnville and dawnville along with the pegasus levels are still my favourite parts of the game.

Why would half life be any different, besides I cant see the tech demo as being a level in the game, whats the harm in putting it out for people to have a fiddle with and perhaps tweak thier systems if they feel the need so that the first immersion into the game proper is that much more enjoyable

because there is no goddamn point...
putting it out for people to have a fiddle with and perhaps tweak thier systems if they feel the need so that the first immersion into the game proper is that much more enjoyable
what the hell does that even mean? you think people would be able to update their systems ust right on a demo released that wasn't the game. Buy better bits and your computer will be better, thats just some half-arsed rationalising which doesn't even work.

OK..get out of the wrong side of bed this morning did we?
*puts a distance between himself and the psycho*
phew somebody needs to calm down.

I was just throwing out ideas if you must know, personally id of thought putting the option out there on magazine covers for a demo, then epople can play it or not as they want.
