I know the gcf files are the compressed info needed to play valves games.

Does anyone know if its neccessary to keep these files after the game has been installed. For instance do I need the counter strike, half-life, and counterstrike source gcf files now that they are installed or can i delete the gcf or back it up to disc. I just want to get that 5 gigs of space back eventually if possible.

Any help would be great.

Some of the files are extracted and installed elsewhere, but the majority are not. You need them to play the games.

The game files are kept in these gcf files, so no, don't delete them. Even if you do, steam will just download them again.
