Read this!

http://www.kuro5hin.org/prime-intellect/

It's an online novel, and it's very, very well written. Quite engaging.

Lawrence had ordained that Prime Intellect could not, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. But he had not realized how much harm his super-intelligent creation could perceive, or what kind of action might be necessary to prevent it.
Caroline has been pulled from her deathbed into a brave new immortal Paradise where she can have anything she wants, except the sense that her life has meaning.

Now these two souls are headed for a confrontation which will force them to weigh matters of life and death before a machine that can remake -- or destroy -- the entire Universe.

Might sound a bit silly, but go read it.

Considering most sci-fi novels, not silly at all :P

I haven't read much, but what I've read was well written.

what's it about? I would love to read it, but I'm a little busy right now.

I'm 2 chapters into it and it's pretty good, nicely written. It's the usual story of AI becoming self-aware and initiating a worldwide paradigm shift, plus the whole existence-in-cyberspace concept which is very similar to this book called Lady Of Mazes which I'm halfway through reading, and which I recommend if you like that aspect of the story. Technological singularity ftw :smoking:

I don't really like any of the characters so far apart from Prime Intellect itself. Still cool though.

Yep, read this, and enjoyed it. It's rather good.

I'm in my supernatural shift right now, so I'm going to go find a book about Gahenna. I'll read this when I go back to my rampant AI shift though.

I'm up to chapter four, it's a brilliant read.

I didn't like the character of Caroline at all, or the final chapter. Other than that it was a cool read.

final chapter is weird... there are some questionable themes in this as well :P but I rather liked Caroline.

There's a link on that site to another short story set in that same Prime Intellect universe by localroger, its all right, worth a read anyway.

I read the first chapter. It was interesting, but far too gruesome for my tastes. The rotting zombie sex scene was just taking it a little too far, imo.

Aww, you haven't got to the incest yet.

But yeah, some of it was a little too much like wierd porn.

With flesh yet on her bones (though the worms in Fred's ejaculate had made good headway), he granted her one final burst of ecstasy and released her, returning her body to normal.

that's...intresting

"Read the novel online", try that one :P
It's actually quite good, if you keep reading

Yes, I overlooked the gruesome/disturbing stuff and managed to read it and the stuff the author said. The singularity idea is pretty cool, but as stephen hawking said, no technological curve can last forever, our technological progress willl likely not end in a singularity but in a long, stable platuea, due to the amount of energy required to power our fantastic machines being a bit too much for the universe to offer. Albeit, when we reach this platuea we will be very advanced indeed.

This has inspired me to yet again post my writing online. For those of you who liked The Resistance, I'll be posting the first few chapters of my new novel online shortly. It goes along with this sort of thing, very advanced AI, but it goes an entirely different direction.
