has anybody noticed when u go to the playground at the start of the game if u go next to the tic-tac-toe game u can hear sightly in the background kids screaming and playing, i was reading pc gamer and i looked at a bit were they were talkin about the force field type thing that stoped humans from breedin and it also said that sometimes u can hear that i was wonderin if anybody else heard has that

Off course they have, it was released last year and the people playing it aren't deaf.

Nice way to welcome the new guy lads

Yeah noticed that too,As a matter of interest did anyone else feel kinda nausues listening to Breen explaining why the suppression field couldnt be turned off and realising what it ment?

I was being serious (kinda) I never heard the kiddies, I was busy throwing pots and pushing swings,

Never heard the kids either.
Another reason to play HL2 again, woohoo!!! :P

Yeah,a short sound file plays when you mess with the rusty playground, really adds to the ambiance as Breen is also chatting about how the "Suppression field will benefit all.....In the long run"(Or something along those lines)

You can not only push the swings, but swing on them. That was fun for me. ^_^
I've never heard the children myself, though I was listening really hard...

Yes! I was anxious to work out the story on the first time through, so I stood in front of the monitor and listened to every word. It really cranked up the oppression factor, and magnified the big funnel-point feeling of release when you finally get the crowbar and drive it through a CP skull...

Im still trying to figure out is it a Physical thing(IE Valve stuck an undectectable to humans sound in there that messes with ur stomach) or is it a mental thing,Like what they are doing is just wrong on a Major level?

I could be wrong, but I recall Breen mentioning "flipping a switch", and promising that the suppression field would be "turned off". He could be talking metaphorically with the flipping a switch bit, but not when coupled with "turned off". It sounds like something definitely mechanical to me (I very much like your idea of some sub- or ultrasonic frequency messing with our libido and/or plumbing). Either way, it struck me as vicious. Super-violent gasmasked police everywhere, no possessions allowed, and you're not even able to get your leg over. oh, man...

The ghostly kid noises struck me dumb with awe the first time around, too, made the whole thing seem so sad.

Which ever method they used to create this atmosphere(or a combination of both) its more subtly Atmosphereic then Ravenholm, which has Atmosphere in the bucket loads.

Might have something to do with the fact that you can connect with certain elements of the city scape while the combine elements mess with it.

The noise of children represent the long lost childhood of the people.
I would have no idea how a suppression field would work. I suppose 'field' is near mechanical so they would have a machine that stops sexual attraction or neuters men? Wierd thing.
Anyway Hellos i'm new.

Question: Half Life 2 is 10 years into the future from Half Life 1? So they killed all children on site or let them grow 10 years? I didn't see any teenagers. :-)

Good question...noone's really sure, but you can speculate that the world is a really dangerous place what with Xenians roaming the wilderness and the Combine vanishing people, so only even the hardiest of adults have survived. Your average 11 year old would be fodder.

Of course, if you want a mundane explanation, then it's inviting a fight with censors if you have kids getting shot up (Fallout 2)...

lol. :) Can you imaging fighting with 11 year olds in HL2?

The 11year olds round here would have the wheels and the radio off a combine apc in 30 seconds

:| I didn't think you were allowed on forums at that age... 13 and over I thought.

And as for the topic: I can imagine the Combine killing children. Perhaps in a future expansion pack, or maybe a novel from Valve, there could be a family hiding out somewhere with two children. Alyx is the oldest "child" you see at about 25 or so. Definitely makes you work the old brain muscles.

I would say the Combine have a controlled breeding program whereby all the children are transformed in to Combine soldiers once they reach maturity - possibly an advance growth method.

Something I thought relevant; One of the phrases spoken by resistance members when you talk to them is: "I'm glad there's no kids around to see this."
Also, for those with gcfscape: Source sounds.gcf > root > hl2 > sound > ambient > voices > playground_memory.wav

Originally Valve has a level called the "factory" where the workers were children who made various Combine creatures, etc. You can even find a child model in the GCF files. This was dropped when Valve decided to create a world where reproduction was outlawed/suppressed - it just didn't make sense for children to exist in the new plotline.

The file is in the source sounds file and its called playground_memory...

Really?....well actually I don't care but It sounds interesting if you have nothing better to do all day....

/replays HL2 for the umteenth time.
