The point of Steam

Isn't the point of Steam so that Valve can bypass publishing and deliver the content faster? So if HL2 is being sent to the publisher in August, doesn't that mean that it should also be available for Steam?

Or do they have to verify with them before they can even release it over Steam? All that talk of seamless updating and getting stuff to the gamers instantly hasn't really been put into too much good use as far as the "anticipated" content.

More people will buy HL2 in a box, at a retailer, rather than over Steam.

If I could get it before it hit retailers over Steam I would; but yeah I'd prefer a nice box and all that stuff (and no monthly fees).

you will be able to preload a week before release

and ffs what monthly fee...

Valve was babbling about that "monthly fee for all Valve content" crap which is just beyond stupid. I would probably shed a tear if it goes to that. I'll buy the expansions already, it's not that bad.

It's an option. If you don't want it, don't subscribe to it.

Personally, I think it would be great in some scenarios, e.g. subscribe and play the single-player expansions for a month. That'd work out cheaper than buying them outright.

I don't know who started that rumour, but he deserves to die slowly.

Vivendi have rights to all published versions of CS, DOD, HL and any extensions of HL.

Thank you for clearing that up, (even though I already knew ;))

On topic: The other main 'point' of steam is to keep games up to date. Although, I mainly use it to connect to multiplayer games. It makes it alot easier.

Well I hope there's no monthly fee option period because it might not be enforced but then for those who do like wasting money they get more stuff. In HL1 they gave TFC away for free, would it be so hard to give stuff away? I thought they said it wasn't about the money. And let's say it is $10 a month... if I would subscribe to that as long as I've been playing HL1 I'd be out a lot of money.

you dont get it. There will be _no_ forced monthly fees, theres either free mods (like the ones that come with hl2 ..cs:s only confirmed atm) and then theres ones u have to pay for like cz. .. Theres plans of a monthly fee scheme... but it wont be forced.
