I've played through HL2 and all the other games (ecl co-op) and i get most of it, however i don't understand why the Vortigaunts have changed sides, please can someone explain this as i must of missed something.

In XEN they where slaves...but when you ´killed Nihilithat (sp?) they got released and joined the humans cause.

to explain short, vorties were controled by the Nihilanth, as the green colars show that, after you killed Nihilanth in HL1, the vorties were "freed", that's why they call you "the one free man"... that's as short az i could tell you, visit wikipedia...

In Half-Life, the vortigaunts were enslaved by the Xenians / Nihilanth (which may have been enslaved by the Combine itself anyway, it's a bit complex), so they had no choice but to fight you.

In Half-Life 2, since you've defeated Nihilanth (OH NOES HL SPOILER), their bonds are cut and they're freed, and they help the resistance.

Shh, I'm outdated on these things. Stopped caring that much about it ages ago :P

Oh all right, thanks everybody, but a new question now. Where in HL2 do you find out about the Vortigaunts and being enslaved? I can't belive i completly missed it.

You have to guess. If you noticed how in HL they had collars, and how in HL2 they do not, you can pretty much piece it together from their mystical speeches. (after the lesser master lay defeated etc etc) Also, notice how vortigaunts under Combine rule have brand new collars, except these are much more stylish.

Well, the fact that in HL1 they are called alien slaves didn't give it away these might have had something to do with it:
"Unity of purpose, the shattering of common shackles, a single road we tread.
"That sharp spur of hope has not dulled to this day. For once the lesser master lay defeated, we knew the greater must also fall in time."
"We have endured these chafing bonds for eons, yet a single moment of further servitude seems intolerable!"
"How often have we slipped our yoke, only to find it choking us again."

i didn't see any Vortigaunts under the combine rule in HL2, this is getting confusing now

Not surprising, there are only two, one of them dead. In the first chapter, when you get off the train, turn to the right and you will se a vortigaunt in chains, demoted to the role of trainstation janitor.

There's one right at the beginning, in the trainstation, with a broom. There's another later on in the game, a dead one, in a chair.
EDIT: bah, rimmer! you're such a smeghead...
