Tiberium for Half-Life 2 is a Command and Conquer mod for the Source engine...from a Russian team. As such the info that follows is being taken from ModDB site.[br]
We're presented our mod- Tiberium. Idea of the mod is based on popular game- C&C- Tiberium Wars. There is two opossing sides- GDI and NOD. Each side have different structures, weapons and vehicles.[br]The game' action is in future, so you'll see modern models of tanks, "walkers", bikes, jets and much more!
Also- the game is Action-RTS, so you can fight like trooper, or build structures to defend your base.

Being an avid C&C fan I'd say....no. There's just no reason this should be actually done.
 
What the? They're stealing all the designs from C&C3 by the looks of those models, not to mention the IP in the first place.

Do they have permission? I can imagine EA would shut them down pretty fast if they don't.
 
I smell cease and desist orders. With CnC3 virtually out the door the season is ripe for closing down IP infringements.

This is an interesting idea, but yea i am trying to get a debate regarding whether it can work or will EA shut it down first...
 
There's already a UT3 mod that's recreating Renegade that has permission from EA...
 
I doubt it. It won't be proper-scaled either, until the Episode 2 big maps update comes out.

Oh shush. The Source engine is capable of doing maps 256 times bigger than your average CSS map, you just need to design it well.
 
1 - I love it how they misspelled "Juggernaught" in one of the concept art pictures. And are they trying to make us think it's a model with the "not textured yet"?

2 - They'll never get permission from EA, and it'll be one big HL: Uplink.

It sucked.
 
As a gamer, it would certainly be fun to play C&C with the Source engine. However, I don't really see the whole purpose in recreating an already existing game.

I'm not certain if this game is freeware or not. But if it is, no permission is needed since the guys won't be making any money from this.
 
That's a fallacy. Permission is needed from the copyright holder regardless.
 
Even so, it would be rather pathetic if EA took action against a few hobby-game designers. EA is a too big "moneymaker" to be bothered by this sort of things.
 
I know Lucas Arts goes nuts passing out C&Ds for Star Wars mods, but I don't recall any being handed out by EA for any of their IP's.

That's the problem with announcing such things about the mod so early on: if it's using a copyrighted name with identical names used for entities found in the game, then you're just begging to get Foxed.
 
It's not going to happen I think... too epic of scope, really.

Also, I believe that LucasArts has a certain policy about making mods based on their IP, so you can be okay... if you get cease and desist from them it's your own fault, not theirs. I could be mistaken, but then, there HAVE been some huge SW mods released with no trouble.

A remake of Renegade on some modern engine sure would be nice, though. That game didn't get nearly as much attention as it deserved, I still play it sometimes when I feel like dealing with the horrible netcode.
 
One of the least likely to happen modifications I've seen.

Not really, if they don't, they can lose the rights to the whole C&C intellectual property.

I hope they have asked the developers if they are allowed to do this.

If not they should stop whining when they get stopped by the devs because of copyright problems...

It's a legal issue.

You see, you can't pick and choose who you want to defend your IP against. If somebody violates your IP, you better damn well protect it.

For example, if EA knew about these guys and ignored them, but then a big developer violated some of EA's C&C IP, they could be damaged in court saying they weren't defending their IP in the first place.

EA also has to maintain the C&C "reputation" and not have it tarnished by having some mod makers release a buggy mod using C&C stuff.


It's all politics. :-\
 
EA will probably crush it, though.

I probably wouldn't be able to understand it, though, if it did get released...

That doesn't make sense at all, I can't see how that would hold up in a court. EA has every right to choose when and how to defend their titles. As a multinational company, they can't take action against every single person (and I assure you this isn't the first, nor the last one) that uses "C&C" in whatever project it might be, unless it's affecting EAs sales. Even if this mod was to be completed, it's definitely not a substitute for the original C&C. Therefore we won't be hearing about a lawsuite anytime soon.

That's like saying:

Valve also has to maintain the HL "reputation" and not have it tarnished by having some mod makers release a buggy mod using HL stuff.

We all know that there are a lot of shitty mods out there that uses names, characters, whatever, without permission. But you don't see Valve (or EA for that matter) go out and bitch about it, do you?
 
You obviously know very little in regards to IP law. EA need to enforce their copyright otherwise they will lose the right to it. It is a clause in the copyright law. You must challenge all infringments on your copyright, regardless of the size or scope or the infringment.

It's unfortunately the law and you cannot pick and choose.

I'll be willing to agree, if you show me a single case where a major game company has taken action against persons who has used their work without permition, for non-profit purposes. Similar to this case that is.
 
Ever heard of Aliens Quake? (this one coined the term "foxing" that tends to be used in these situations.
Generations mod for Quake 2 (or 3, I forget which)
How about something more recent? The guys making a Halo RTS that got Cease and Desisted by Microsoft?

That enough for you?

There's a reason why we say these things, you know - we're not just making things up for fun.
 
Main reason for cease and desists usually is the argument that the product they (the mod team) are making is somehow reflecting negative fame/publicity to the actual IP which could very well work in this case.
