So I have just read two posts, one in the Mortal Sins thread and the other in the Oil thread making some mention that the Prius isn't actually that good for the environment.

Educate me as I thought it was better than most cars

Point #1, it's a new car that uses up more resources.

Point #2
as the second least CO2-emitting vehicle behind the Volkswagen Polo 1.4 TDI
....get a polo 1.4TDI

Point #3 battery manufacture creates pollution

Point # 4
A 2006 study by CNW Marketing Research, Inc. calculated the overall energy cost of a Prius at US$3.25 per mile and a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV at US$2.94 per mile. It concluded that 2005 hybrids cost "significantly more in overall energy costs than conventional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles."[84] David Friedman of the Union of Concerned Scientists commented that the study "has been completely contradicted by studies from MIT, Argonne National Laboratory, and Carnegie Mellon's Lifecycle Assessment Group."[85] An article on the Better World Club website[86] investigates the source of the statement "a Hummer is more energy efficient over its lifetime than a Prius", which it characterizes as an urban legend. It suggests that the source may be the CNW "Dust to dust" study,[84] or follow-up articles by James L. Martin or Chris Demorro, and goes on to challenge some of the assumptions made in the study. A critique of the 2007 version of the CNW report by the Pacific Institute concluded that "closer inspection suggests that the report's conclusions rely on faulty methods of analysis, untenable assumptions, selective use and presentation of data, and a complete lack of peer review. Even the most cursory look reveals serious biases and flaws."[87]

In any case, even CNW Marketing has recognized the market has changed. Their 2007 update[88] for 2006 model year vehicles (see spreadsheet)[89] now lists the Prius as 25% less expensive per mile than the GMC Yukon, 28% less expensive than the Hummer H1 and 30% less expensive than the Toyota Sequoia. The update however does not include any of the details present in the 2005 report, so it is not certain if their previous assumptions of 109,000 miles (175,000 km) for a Prius lifetime versus 380,000 miles (610,000 km) or more for the lifetime of a large SUV are still being used, or if came from improved economies of scale.

Point # 5 it looks gay.

I've heard that the lithium mine actually creates something like a half-mile dead zone around the mine where nothing can grow because of the basic mineral buildups.

I get 35mpg on the highway with this...

But still, to save money on gas (about $120/month), I'm moving from about 30 miles to 2 miles away from work on Monday.

I did the same thing! *except change 2 miles to under a mile*. I fill up weeks in between. Feels goooood.

My former workplace was 2.5 miles from my current residence. I would have moved closer to my new job, except these apartments are 1000 square feet and a really good rate (same pricing as the 750 sq feet ones). Ironically I only need about 200 square feet to be honest, but I love space!

At just under 2 miles & a good driving-line (traffic lights, etc), it's not much of a commute at all. IT certainly feels good filling the tank like every 3 weeks. Feels odd doing it slightly more often than every week.

I havent bought gas in a little over a month now whooo! I'll have to do it tomorrow or saturday though probably.

Could you not walk the less-than-one-mile distance to work?

I'm saying this as a non-driver (yet). :bonce:

Yeah seriously Phantom and Pitz, you guys just sound really lazy :p.

Economics & efficiency. Considering I charge AT LEAST $50/hour freelance (and am way over-booked) & I hate normal driving . . .

30 (days/month) x 5/7 (workdays/week) = 21.4 workdays per month

21.4 hours (or more) x $50/hour = $1070 minimum freelance pay
(30 miles - 2 miles) x 21.4 = 599.2 miles / month (reduced wear/tear)
599.2 miles / 25mpg (my driving style when impatient) * $3.30 / gallon = $79

^ That's the monthly cost of living 30 miles from work :(

I get 40+ mpg on the highway with this:

Not my favorite look, but I respect that car, lol. Would make a decent daily-driver when I have a nicer sports car.

I did my share of walking to work, but I just love driving my car *and I love my sleep. Waking up that extra 30 minutes really doesn't work will with me.*

Back in my day, we had to drive to work barefoot, in the snow, uphill, both ways.

I like Prii. I looked at them a few years ago, but decided to buy a house instead. Maybe I'll just wait for one of these...

Prius? That's the car Jeff Dunham's taking the piss out of in his shows?

Me want.

My family got a prius a while back. It's okay, but it feels a bit sluggish and only has a 40 mpg average on my daily trips.

I don't know if all people who drive toyotas are retarded, but it seems all the retarded people drive toyotas. Just sayin'.

Cars like the Prius are for people who want to get from A to B, and feel smug while they're at it.

Which is why people who love cars would rather spoon their eyeballs onto a plate and eat their face, than drive one.

And all morons and red-necks drive American blocks of steel?

/snicker. I drive a 2006 Toyota Camry Grande thing, bite me. All the bogans down this way drive Holden Commonwhores I mean Commodores. Holden is under GM so the latter quote is correct, at least down here anyway.

lol they aint all retards

sum of my friends drive toyotas it's cool.

and they arent retarded.
