Has anyone noticed when the razor flies through the box that it just sort of explodes into wood shrapnel? this made me sort of sad...

I guess it's because the box was made of just 1 wood texture and one panel on each side or something, but i was still thinking, "Awww... it shouldn't have been able to happen like that. The razor would cut through, but it would just fly and push the box a little while it kepy flying, until it fall/got stuck in the box..."

i don't know if i'm just being insanely nitpicky or if it's bugged anyone else, but i've concluded that when i map in hl2, my boxes will be individually planked...

yes mock-ups = placeholders (many from the orig. hl with optimized textures)

If you look at the ravenholm part of the E3 2004 vid, you can see that the crates crack and splinter realistically.

I think is all down to the number of objects in the level.

I think all items *could* be built from individual parts, but the performance hit would be too high, so they would only model some of the objects on that basis.

Also, this may be part of the performance scaling system valve has mentioned. If you have a high end PC, perhaps more of the objects are 'component' based, wheras on a lower spec PC it'll use a 'one peice' object.

The pallet's destruction in the begining of the tool-shed video was realistic.

The maps would need to be recompiled for lower spec machines.. so, no thats not true, won't be like that.

I for one will NOT buy this game if boxes of wood don't break like realistic boxes.

Bad box breaking can bring any game to IT'S KNEES!

The breaking of boxes is something that should never be overlooked. When we take a look back over the history of computer games one thing is apparent and that is boxes are abundant. Boxes were everywhere in prince of persia all those years ago. Moving boxes, pulling boxes even jumping on boxes. The mario series of games really took the concept of jumping on boxes to dizzying heights. It left players with jaws gaping in awe at the splediforous jumping onto boxes. Lets not forget our old favourite Wolfenstein 3d, i actually can't remember if there were boxes in this game so i won't comment on it. But there were certainly boxes in tetris! Hohoho, let us not forget tetris. The game was BASED on boxes! Watching those boxes, sometimes glued together in strange shapes, fall down our screen was just fantastic gaming. We can't forget the boxes in Alex Kidd in Miracle word either. Punching them with our super fist to gather that shiny bag of $$$ (or in some cases a ghost! run, run for your lives children!) was a thrilling aspect of the game. Though the breaking animation back then consisted of the box crumlbing into 4 smaller pieces we got one of the first glimpses into what it's like to break a box in a computer game. So in conclusion, we sit here and ask ourselves "What the hell was the point of writing all that inane babble?". It's a very good question and i'm sure there's an answer. But if you're looking for an answer from me, i'm sorry, i don't have one. I'm simply here to spout crap. Crap about nothing. Which brings me to another point, if tetris never existed would there be boxes in games at all??? It boggles the mind. Some may lose sleep pondering over that alternate reality.

Seemed fine to me. I would expect those rotorblade flying things to cut a whole through the box, it'd be a bit complicated that wouldn't it.

I think the box just 'exploded' to show that the flying thing shredded the box as it came into contact with it.

Wanna bet it's gonna fly realistically through the box in the final game?

have a look at the E3 2004 video....the bit just before Gordon hops into the crane....he throws some boxes against the wall. Looks realitic to me.

What I did notice about tunnels is the right side of the crosshair went red, even thought he wasnt being turned on the right.

I cant figure out why it did.

That's when his ammo gets low. The right hand side of the crosshair is an ammo meter.

You mean Gordon's ammo counter goes red when he runs out of ammo?

Uh..Yeah! Same what he said.

Actually Mr Fusion's post was convincing though the argument he was talking about was either a joke or bull ^-^

Anyway, the box that broke on that old video was indeed crappy but don't worry because there'll be objects that break a lot more realistically (including the boxes)

Ah so it seems, pretty nifty how the right side represents ammo :D

I just noticed an amwesome dx9 thing they've done. Theyve raised some sand on the the floor then put the underlying floor all shiny, looks pimp.

Just remember, don't expect the game to be perfect in every way. It will be damn good, no doubt. But if you're hyping it too much you'll end up playing it like an inspector, looking for any possible flaws. The box broke kinda crappy, but there are indeed many objects that will break realistically.

After all, who cares about a stupid box in some old sewers, when you can lift massive cargo crates with a giant crane, set zombies on fire, shoot barrels and other shit with the manipulator and who knows what :)
