So, I'm an ignorant American. What's the difference between the several different names there are for Britain? ie, United Kingdom, Great Britain, England, Britain, and I'm sure there are others...

United kingdom = Britain.

England = .... England.

No? You live here and you don't even know.

United Kingdom England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Falklands Islands, channel islands ect.

Great Britian is England Scotland and Wales

England, Scotland and Wales are 3 countries that collectivly make up Great Britain.

The United Kingdom consists of Great Britain, the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland (Only Northern Ireland, not the entire Ireland) and a few other random places like the Falklands.

The Commonwealth of Nations is made up of the United Kingdom and 52 other states.

Contrary to relativly common belief, the Republic of Ireland is not a member of any of these (Sorry, I had to add that).

And Britain comprises of England / Northern Ireland / Scotland, I think.

edit: beaten

BAH TO YOU!

I was along those lines in my head :(

I automatically hate all Americans that say that Wales is in England.
Makes me feel like burning things.

Like a bunch of canniblas eating each others brains for lunch!

Olympics, the team is Great Britain. Commonwealth games / World Cup as England, Wales, Scotland, N. Ireland.

Great Britain= England + Scotland + Wales
United Kingdom= Great Britain + Northern Ireland
Ireland= Republic of Ireland + Northern Ireland
British Isles= Great Britain + Ireland

There are few things that annoy me more than when people say 'England' when they actually mean the UK. Like 'America and England invaded Iraq'.

PICK UP A ****ING ATLAS!

Bah, does it have to so damn complicated with the UK thing.

Do some research on the internet. Google is your friend. ;)

man just name it one thing...so needlessly complex

I automatically hate all people who say that Ireland is in England/Britain/the UK.
I've been asked "What's it like to have a Queen?" before. I got my own back by describing, in detail, the Irish system of government.

I understand that England is just the one island... or part of the main island... but why the distinction between UK and GB? I understand they represent different collections of land, but why is the distinction? Is GB an outdated term/concept or something?

Americans that think the UK/GB is England annoy me.

UK is basically GB with Northern Ireland added on.

Only because Hackney Cab drivers spread filthy lies to gullible and naive (and frankly pissed out of there skulls) university students, they actually believe it

While we're on this subject, I propose that we throw away all these separate state names like California, Nebraska, New York, etc... There's what, 50 of them! Just name them all America.

Yeah I got that, but what's the point of making a distinction between including Northern Island and not including Northern Island?
Because there are people in the world that don't throw a hissy-fit over having to remember 2 different ****ing names.

That big chuck of landmass just outside Europes costal line is England to me exept Greenland and Ireland.
