Anybody see the movie "Real Genius" ? It was this movie from the 80s about some of the "finest minds" on earth, and the smartest out of all of them was a guy named Laslo.

So I was wondering if maybe they weren't talking about the same person in that part in Sandtraps where the Laslo dude gets eaten by antlions and the guy who lives says "It's a shame...Laslo was the finest mind of our generation" or something like that...

Lol, brilliant find there!
I thought that quote was from somewhere else - HL2 is full of so many nudges and quotes from films and other sources. Haven't seen that film though, is it any good?

hmmm... interesting, never thought of that.
Good find!

I hate to say that I laughed at such a moment.

Then I felt sad for LAAAASSLOOOW.

IMO it's a great movie...if you don't mind the fact that it's 20 years old or so.

Heck yeah! That movie is a classic.

Heddy Lemar (Lemar the headcrab, the good doctor calls him)
B Movie actor
another movie refrence

yes the Heddy Lamarr reference was a lot more transparent than that lazlo one
I'm not convinced on the Real Genius connection, it seems so tenuous

It may be coincidence, or it may not be, whatever the case, its still a good find.

other refrence quotes

"Hit the road jack", obviously refrence to the song by Ray Charles
a resistance fighter says it to you after you defeat the gunship.

it's interesting to note that the earlier script that was posted on these forums (from caption files from the beta, the changes are minor) had totally different lines for this sequence
it seemed more serious, and the character was 'Tobias' rather than Lazlo.... though Tobias Lazlo is certainly possible

Yea, if it had been a more common name I wouldn't given it a 2nd thought, just that Laslo is one of those names you don't hear too often, plus somebody at Valve clearly likes movies/references...in addition to the ones mentioned, if you play CS:S you'll notice there's an open file that says "TPS Reports" (ala Office Space) on one of the computers in cs_office.

Another thing, in the movie Laslo lives in the "Steam tunnels" :P

Notice, also, in Op4 one of your team mates says "Anytime, anywhere". Nice little Aliens reference, even if it wasn't very funny.

Haha nice... can't say I agree with all their choices, though. Ed Harris doesn't seem nerdy enough to play Dr. Kleiner and what's with the "Terminator" as the G-man..? lol

I think Larry David would be a good Dr. Kliener

I actually felt very sorry for Laslow and his friend. ;(

Especially when he says "Poor Laslow. He was one of the finest minds of our generation." :(

Haha, yeah. Also, on the one computer in cs_office that is on, the start menu says "fart" with :) beside it instead of "start."

Laslo ... maybe he is the rock station DG in GTA: Vice City or GTAIII :D

that's Lazlow
Lazlow is also a real guy
for the record, the one in hl2 is Laszlo

Wow, sure are a lot of counter-strike stuff in the task bar thingy.

now i really wish they'd have incorporated the quote, which in my opinion, is the BEST line in any movie (a cookie to whoever names the flick).
Dillon ... you sonuvabitch!

Yeah, Op4 was a little less subtle.

They had a few more movie references, like Full Metal Jacket for example.

I dont really consider op4 a significant part of the HL story though.

Predator.

What's the matter? The CIA got you pushing to many pencils?

BTW, as for the movie actors... it almost looks like Dr. Breen was modelled after Sean Connery, they look soooo similar. Though Jean Reno also is quite similar to Gregori.
