valve took the idea for half life 2 from this short story from 1971

Nonsense. They took the idea for HL2 from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

I thought you were about to say something about a certain novel written in 1948.

This.

Btw, anyone here think the movie "Children of Men" looked an awful lot like HL2? (edit: Setting-wise that is)

Stylistically and environmentally, yes, which is why I love it.
Plot/theme wise, not really.

This does bear mention.
this story was written in 1971 and it is about a war with the combine.
where else did valve come up with the name combine??

from the combination of technology and victims...?

Valve freely admit that the basic idea for the story of Half-Life came from Stephen King's 1980 novel, "The Mist".
While I'm sure they were influenced by other works if there were any major ones they would have mentioned them.

I think OP is referring to Half-Life 2's plot.

True, but I was demonstrating that Valve has been pretty open in the past about the influences on their games. The idea that they are secret plagiarises is absurd.

Umm... the English language? It's definitely believable that people independently named mechanical assimilating empires "combine," especially within a several-decade timespan. Nonsense names like "Klingon" or "Vogon" would be more of a stretch.

I think HL2 has more of a Lord of the Rings feel myself.

This is the first poster I have ever met that has made me post two failure images in less than 10 minutes.
EDIT: By the way, I bet Philip K Dick came up with the idea first and this guy just stole it.

I know valve always mentions 'The Mist' by Stephen King when it comes to inspirations for HL2, but i really dont see any connection... Can someone figure this out? The mist is a horror novel where mist takes over the town and aliens invade too, is that the connection???

Change the setting from a town to a science facility.
Change the mist allowing aliens to invade to a resonance cascade allowing aliens to invade.

I haven't read, "The Mist", BTW.

HL1 not HL2. And what Operational said.

HL's plot is clearly ripped off from Doom.
Change, Mars to New Mexico, Demons to Aliens and Hell to Xen.

You know in The Day The Earth Stood Still, aliens come to earth and recruit humanity into a combined federation of species, the term Combine can refer to a form of goverment, around WW2 england had a combine goverment, where all the main parties were equally in control

Klingon is an actual word. Google it.

Better yet, use Google Images.

Googled it. Found no uses not related to Star Trek. Also, on Wikipedia: "They were named for Lieutenant Wilbur Clingan, who served with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry in the Los Angeles Police Department."

Dude, in doom, nothing really goes wrong. in fact, you dont really know whats going on except your in a facility on mars and demons are attacking you... Why? because doom has no storyline. half life 1 did, it actually showed the changing and evolution of something over time (black mesa). You start out in black mesa which is totaly fine, nothing has gone wrong, but then an experiment opens up a portal to an alien world and all hell breaks loose. So you cant just say its doom with aliens instead of demons and NM instead of mars... Something actually happend to explain why its filled with aliens, where doom doesnt explain why there are demons in mars...

Doom did have a plot. They just didn't explain it in-game.

It looks to me that the only part they piked for HL2 was the "terrifying war" and the name: "the combine", I wouldn't say they got the whole plot idea from this, I see your point though.
