hehe
so i finally got my hands on HL2 and wow it was running smoothly, untill i noticed something

so here is my problem
I can hear all sounds
all dialogs spoken by guards like "move along"
or barney telling me " i have been working undercover......"

but well i cant hear anysound for what the big guy says on the screens all around the station
or what the scientist speaks on the screen in barney's torture room

basically everythhing is working fine
but I know I am supposed to hear sounds for these too cause when i switched on captions I was able to see captions but I am not hearing any sounds for what "people on screens / video phones or whatever damn gadgets " speak!!

so please help

well by saying " i got my hands on it" I meant I bought it, heh! funny question

not really
Step 1 verify your files - go to steam games, right click on hl2, open properties, verify game files
Step 2 if step 1 does not work - get new sound drivers

that was most obvious approach and i did that,

the problem however is that there is nothing wrong with sound hardware/drivers They are working seamlessly, so seamlessly I dont think I need the sound stutter update
only thing thats not working is the damn sounds of people who are speaking some damn things on the video screens

It doesnt affect gamesplay in any manner
but really those small dialogs make things quite interesting.

specs please - video card, processor, sound card and ram
I'm guessing if verifying the cache went fine and your audio and video drivers are up to date it is a problem related to a 64 bit AMD processor or an unstable Nvidia Driver or if you have 5.1 surround sound selected instead of 2 speaker configuration

Not a problem with AMD64 processors, speaking from experience

well that narrows it down further - thanks death evader

What sound option do you have set in HL2?

Damnit I was just about to say the very same thing.
Turning the quality down could help. If it does then it's most likely a files problem, and I would consider deleting your GCF and re-downloading it if you have the connection for it.

Dunno if this would help, but have you tried turning your Sound Acceleration in DXDIAG to the max on the slider ?

You using speakers or headphones? And what sound option is yours set to.

eh some peopel beat me to it.

isn't that what is beautiful about computer troubleshooting - there are a hundred equally likely and valid suggestions that could be the cause of one problem :P
See what he says if he ever comes back

I had the same problem. Update the driver or turn down sound quality (I did both).
