Here's the story for vortigaunts:
They are not able to see the future or the past, if they could you wouldn't have been able to beat them in Half-Life 1 and in Half-Life 2 the war would be won if they could.
They have 1 mind
Alyx says
"The Vortigaunts told me you were here"
the know this because the 1 in the lab knows this
also Alyx says
"Every once in a while a Vortigaunt gets captured and we get a picture of some of the place"
The one in the canals that gives your your airboat gun says
"We are coterminous"
This means having the 1 scope / view i.e. 1 mind
Nihilath (the spelling is a guess) used to control this 1 mind but it is now under the control of G-man's orginisation
"The border world; Xen is now in our control"
"We are guided be the same mystery"
That is the Vortigaunts story

I agree with all of you’re deductions. They are solid. I think their might be something else we don’t quite understand that’s waiting to come into our picture…

Let me point out some things that would lead us to look deeper and provide some of my own idle musings (unsolid stuff) on them to stimulate conversation.

While I agree that the vorts are not omniscient, they do seem to have wisdom far exceeding our own.
I’m not sure but perhaps they have wisdom beyond what can be explained by appealing to their collective intelligence. Perhaps they can remember past lives of Vortigaunts also. “We cannot forget those whose cords you cut.” “We see you still in Black Mesa. Clearly we see you in the Nihilanth's chamber."

"We are coterminous"
Doesn’t he go on to say, "We are a tapestry woven of vortessence. It is the same for you if only you would see it. "
Is human kind of the verge of a collective awakening?

Also
"We remember the Freeman. We are coterminous. "
These thoughts seem related. As in… “The Vorts are coterminous with freeman.

"We are you, Freeman. And you are us. "

“For a brief time you joined with us. You are one. Between the worlds. "
If we knew for sure what this meant I think it would speak volumes. Killing the Nihilanth would be a good guess. The moment of the resonance cascade would be another good guess.

Maybe Gordon was “selected” by something during those moments. Which brought him to the attention of the G-Man and the Vortigaunts.

“How often have we slipped our yoke, only to find it choking us again.”
This struggle has been going on a long time. Humans are new on the scene.

"Unity of purpose, the shattering of common shackles, a single road we tread. "
Humans are squarely sided with the vortigaunts.

Enough for now…

You make very good points

I remember something like
"If only you could see the mind inside your mind". I think G-man is controling you the same way as the Vorts.

One thing that confussed me was
"We call you sib". They say that you are related by blood?! After this they say "but..." but I can't remember it now.

I think that Gordon was scouted before Black Mesa as his reference was unknown during the intro to HL1 while giving his stats. Aswell Sheperd's name was mysteriously moved to the advanced training list during boot camp of Opposing Force. But I'm getting of topic.

PS: Is it realy tea?

As before… Idle speculations here from me…

Let’s pull out the reference material then…

Ok. Let’s see now. He says, “We call you sib, although your mind and meaning are a mystery to us. "
Interesting statement… Perhaps Gordon’s mind was joined with the communal “vortessence” temporarily. He doesn’t realize however. (perhaps while he was unconscious due to the resonance cascade) The vorts feel like he was once a part of their mind… but now he is independent again so his internal thoughts are again mysterious to them.

Maybe they are both controlled by something higher. Eh… eh… *shrugs shoulders*

Good point. Maybe Gordon was chosen by “something” to play a role in history’s shaping. This “something” drew g-man and the vortiguants attention to him. *more shrugging*

The Vortigaunts seem to put great emphases on the fact that you are truly a “Freeman” however the G-Man acts like you’re his property. Maybe the Vortigaunts know something the G-Man doesn’t. We think of the G-Man as being a very mature and powerful being. Perhaps he is very powerful but insecure enough that he tries very hard (and successfully so) at appearing more powerful then he really is. Maybe he has a higher up that he isn’t even aware of… Sort of like if a God thought that he was the end all of creation but in reality something so much more vastly powerful exists that this being doesn’t even feel the need to correct the God about his hubris. His ignorance may even serve its purposes.

This kind of reminds me of Gnosticism now that I have postulated it. An Gnostic feels that God (or at least the creator of earth) is a Flawed and insane demiurge but through special knowledge (Gnosis) he can save himself by transcending this demiurge’s creation. –no intention to oversimplify anyone’s spiritual beliefs-

It asks you that question. You must find your own answer. If I knew I wouldn’t ask.

Ha ha... me again sorry.
I wanted to post this idea that Baldrick originally postulated again in this thread. He brought it up in a long winded rambling, most of which was very unconvincing for me and many others. But this statement was well thought out and got ignored by people who were just flaming his rant:
Baldrick said:
I found out that the guys at valve peiced the vortigaunts name together off two words.

I broke up vortigaunt into vorti and gaunt and i found out this.
Closest thing to vorti i can find is Vortical, which means "Of, relating to, or moving in a vortex; whirling."
And everyone knows that a vortex is sort of like a portal.
And they did teleport through the portals in hl1.
And gaunt means "Thin and bony; angular"
Which does describe the vortigaunts structure quite well.

I had brought it up before that I thought Vortex was an important aspect of their name. Eastern Mystics who attempt to describe the state of being where a person is one with the universe often use a metaphor that:
“Things (including people) are like vortices in a river.” A vortex is an individual thing and namable separate from the whole of the river… however you would be hard pressed to identify where the river stops and the vortex begins.

Being a collective conscience I would think that they might see themselves similarly… Knowing that individuals exist yet being only one whole.

Nice job. I saw that thread. Interisting stuff.
(I gust realised I'm a nerd!)*run out door screaming*

Something I found slightly insulting was
"We take our stand beside you, here, upon this miserable rock." Hey some of us live here :frown:

"We see you still in Black Mesa. Clearly we see you in the Nihilanth's chamber. " I don't think that the way they say "We see you still..." has any signifigant meaning. I think that either the just perceve memory differently to humans becouse of thier group conciousness or it's gust the way they talk. (Like French people :frog: can get English grammer mixed up couse it's different in French.) The same when they say "The Freeman" or "The Eli Vance"

"What seems to you a sacrifice is merely, to us, an oscillation. We do not fear the interval of darkness. " WTF dose that mean. An oscillation is a swing between 2 points like a pendulium. Do the mean a sacrifice to them is just a way of getting from point A to B. But using the word oscillation would indiacate that they expect it to go back from B to A. I'm confusing meself.

But one thing is for shure. The Vorts know your being controled.:borg:
"Far distant eyes look out through yours."
"Something secret steers us both. We shall not name it."
"How many are there in you? Whose hopes and dreams do you encompass?"
"Could you but see the eyes inside your own, the minds in your mind, you would see how much we share."

:cheers:Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow...

This line just makes me excited as hell...

"That sharp spur of hope has not dulled to this day. For once the lesser master lay defeated, we knew the greater must also fall in time. "

As I was reading this thread, I realized that the vortigaunts might have been tied to Gordon Freeman since before he severed Nihilanth's cord. Once the resonance cascade occurs, after your brief view of Xen you're transported to a darkened area where you are surrounded by vortigaunts. Then you wake. That may have some significance, possibly something metaphorical like your encounter with the vortigaunts might've triggered some awakening inside your mind, though you don't realize it. On the other hand it could simply be coincidence that you met up with the vortigaunts, but playing around with the theory that it might mean something is much more fun. Remember that it was the slaves that you saw first, not the grunts or the masters.

When the vortigaunts talk about not fearing the interval of darkness, I've always believed that to mean they do not fear death. The oscillation might indicate that they believe they'll come back to life, eventually. Reincarnation within the hive mind, perhaps. It's possible then, if there's any truth to that, that each vortigaunt born could share the same "soul" as one who has died, their thoughts and memories living on through that new vortigaunt. Although that sort of undermines the statement, "we remember those whose cords you cut in Black Mesa"; if their thoughts and memories were reincarnated through other vortigaunts then they wouldn't be "lost" to the collective. They wouldn't have even brought it up. So perhaps they're simply talking about an afterlife, which is what I think.

I heard someone else (can't remember who) say in another thread that the lines:

"Far distant eyes look out through yours."
"How many are there in you? Whose hopes and dreams do you encompass?"
"Could you but see the eyes inside your own, the minds in your mind, you would see how much we share."

Might be a "joke," referring to all the people who are playing as Gordon Freeman, the players seeing through his eyes and all the minds of those players inside his own. If you were to look at it from a different perspective though, thinking of the context as being something "real" and not a game, then I suppose the vortigaunts could mean that the hopes and dreams of humanity, their entire species, rests on Gordon Freeman.

Some of those things that you posted are intriguing, Tea. Things left unsaid by the vortigaunts...particularly:

"We never dreamed to see you in coporeal form."
"We are mindful of the words of our greatest philosopher: companum gannennen vorgenot!"
"We deem this company inviolable."
"You humans, always in the qualidity."

The coporeal form thing is just interesting. Doesn't hold any deeper meaning than what it is, just something interesting.

The next line might have some meaning. Even though it's an alien language, companum sounds like company, and vorgenot could mean vortigaunt or something in relation to the vortigaunts. Thinking about what a philosopher of a hive-minded race might have to say, it might be something along the lines of vortigaunts belonging to the same company, the same family, the same mind. It might also be something like trusting in the hive-mind, or sacrificing one's self for the greater company of vortigaunts. Maybe it means that even alone, someone tied to the vortessence is always in the company of their brethren.

In the next line, the vortigaunts also talk about company. Inviolable means secure; the definition is "secure from tresspass or violation." Now, the vortigaunts were supposed to fight alongside you originally (spawn a combine and a vortigaunt together and you'll see them fight...the vortigaunts even say things that you didn't have in your list, Tea). If you think of it that way then their words might mean, "All threats are gone and we are safe from attack." But looking at it after the previous context, they could again be talking about the hive mind. The hive-mind is something that only Freeman has been able to tap into; I doubt even if Nihilanth or the controllers could get into the vortigaunts' collective thoughts. It is very secure that way. So when they say, "this company is inviolable," they might mean that their minds are safe from the intrusion of outside forces. And if you are in their company, perhaps Freeman shares a similar trait. In another thread I discussed with someone that Freeman's limitless potential might be that no one can predict what he's going to do or what he can achieve; no one can see his thoughts. That seems to fit with these words. Even the vortigaunts cannot tell what is going on in his mind.

I woudn't want to live on Earth when it is combine controlled, do you?

I thought Xen looked infinitely more beautiful than Earth, anyway.

...Except for, y'know...all the murderous beasts. But the scenery was nice!

Xen does look cool, but the grass is always greener. The Vorts (after being freed) probably found earth quite interesting. "Hey gumbak look at all funny looking tall grey things"

The Vorts seem faairly pissed. Listen to thier tone of voice in some thing they say.
"The Combine will pay in kind for their depravity"(Did they say that?)
"Let this war end in either total victory or our extinction. No further compromise shall we allow."

THe were defenatly coontroled be the Combine
"One the Lesser Master (Nihilath) had fallen we knew the Greater (The Combine) must also fall. But they say the Greater Master_ singular. So is the Combine controled by 1 being or is it refering to the empire?

What do you guys think of the "We still see..."s. I think its just how they percieve memory differently becouse of thier group conciousness.

Sorry:o, I'm raising more questions than answers

"We take our stand beside you, here, upon this miserable rock." Hey some of us live here

Well practically most of its been reduced to wastelands, ravaged by aliens with only a few combien cities that hold the few remaining humans...i think it is pretty miserable :)

One thing though. Even though they have one consciousness they seem to be slightly individual. The one in route kanal is obsesed with freedom and Gordon and that "Something secret steers us both" while the one in Eli's lab won't shut up about "The Eli Vance". And how can a group consciousness have a "greatest philosopher":dork:? Maybey they are heading towards individualism.

PS: Sorry for bad speling and mis-quoteing :o

I don't want this thread to die it's interestig stuff. So please respond ;(

None of them shut up about eli, he was thier first collaborater and they honour him so much

Do you think the Vortigaunts... even in peaceful time... still, treasures hate to Gordon Freeman? SInce you killed alot of them in HL1.

I think they know it was a necessary evil… Doesn’t mean they have to like it though.

The votiguants have a collective mind. When the combine found the vortiguants, they employed a more powerfull race (which the also enslaved), nahilith (still cant spell it, lol) and his cronies, the controllers, to use the vorti's collective thoughts to control them.

When you destroy the nahilith, they were freed from the mind control.

We are a tapestry woven of vortessence. It is the same for you if only you would see it. :naughty:

But how does a group consiosness have a greatest philosipher?
I think there is something special about Gordon other than being the dude in the HEV suit. The same for Adrien

Well maybe the whole morale of the story is that a lot of humans, put in a situation at the right time, can all show their greatest strengths and triumph equally as well as Gordon Freeman. I mean, do you really expect a graduate of MIT to battle hordes of Xen species, Antlions, and Combine? I figure there are a good number of humans out there that could show similar strengths, they just didn't happen to be in the situations that lets them express these qualities. As the Gman said, "the right person in the wrong place can make a world of difference..."

Theres nothing special about Gordon or Adrian, except that they focussed their minds on matters that they cared about, and it turned out to help them when the time needed them.

Wow. Where'd all the smart people come from? :cheese:
The one vortigaunt quote that really interested me was the 'we serve the same mystery'. I take that to mean the G-Man since he is the biggest mystery the game presents to us. And it's not too hard to believe that after metting with Gordon at the end of HL1 that the G-Man met with the Vortigaunts.
But Darkside55 has the exact same idea I have. The whole during the resonance cascade that Gordon was somehow joined to the Vortigaunts he saw. We'll probably see where that takes our hero in the 'final' chapter. I think i've read that Half-Life is only going to be a trilogy though it will have countless expansions. Gordon's story is the one that matters.

Question: Is it a group mind, or a hive mind? There are fundamental differences.

Did you know that vorts only converse verbaly for the sake of humans? Or at least thats what the vorts in the Vort Camp said (I think).

Just because they're connected to one big mind dosn't mean you can't retain individuality. It just comes second.

Oh, and i think you're connected to the hive mind because.... because... of the Resonance? Maybe you were Nihalith for a couple of seconds, i don't know.

Unfortunately, i cant find the damn thread i found it on :P

There was a partial sentence taken from somewhere, i cant remember exactly (a clipboard in a picture somewhere, possibly).

it said this:

"Freeman : Gordon, Increased neural activity in aul-"

or something to that effect.

Could this be related to the link that he seems to have with the vorts?

If anyone remembers exactly where etc, t'would be appreciated :)

Good point. The Vorts at the camp were talking witch they wouldn't have to if it was a hive mind. It's like a LAN, some but not all data is shared between Vorts.

I was wondering how the Vort slave was cut of from the hive mind without killing him. You're a genius

group mind. One of them learns, every other one learns. If they have some one to tell them that gordon was bad, they would all think he was bad.

Like propaganda, the government only tells you how they want you to act. The nahalith did this, and if any one of them thought otherwise, then the nahlith can have other vortis kill the rebel. They belived the nahlith was thier leader, because it said so. So they followed its orders.

Ah, balls then, never mind.

I like the Quote you hear them say:

"No false veils of time or space may interviene"

He/she (???) seems to be refering to the vortessance and/or their link with gordon.

It seems to explain why the keep talking of past tense events in the present tense, they have a different perception of time to us, but they dont seem to have mentioned any differences in the perception of space.

well dont u guys think that the vortigaunts are really bad done in hl2 ?
no really, their models look like zombies and their voices sound like ugly old bitches who smoked for 50 years! i mean i really loved the original vortigaunt but the new 1 is sooo ****ig shitty :(

but the dumbest thing about them is that they dont appear foreign anymore .. they are like humans this is so ****in dumb and shitty ****in hell go to hell you guys who made those new models :flame:

i really dont like to speculate about the vortigaunts now cos i dont like them anymore , Valve sux !!!!!!! yea and please dont delete this post nor bann me cos its my own opinion!

lol didnt u listen valve made the vortigaunts bad for hl2 , they were my favourite aliens in hl1 cos of their strange models and voices and their creepy appearance , but now they are just like any dumb alien **** shit like in Starship Voyager or such crap.
they have lost their charm and thats why valve sucks , they cannot keep their old stuff interesting , they make it crappy over the time they just change everything and they really orientate themselves on diffrent games and thats the point , they just copy terrible ideas of other games and add their own 'new' shit to it!
was it really so hard to just do it like in half-life 1 ? uve done it before , so why do you delete just everything what made half-life to 'Half-Life' ? but i see it doesnt help , u guys cannot understand me cos ur no 'real' fans of half-life and even if u think ur so u arent cos u like the new crap.

eber has spoken!

Sorry when I saw that there was now a 3rd page I went to it straight away and replied without reading your first post.
PS: Don't double post

I think the Vortigaunts are Individuals who can 'add' images/words/scripts/whatever to the Vortessence, other Vortigaunts can then take things out from it. That is how you can have Vortigaunts speak as individuals and have great Vortigaunt 'Poets' and 'Philosophers'. Basically the 'Vortessence' is like one huge forum for Vortigaunts only.

Yeh, that's my theory, there not one mind, there many minds that can 'post' information in the Vortessence Forum.

lol what a dumb idea their minds have just such a great power that they can read each others thoughts as long as they are close enough together.

they have lost their charm and thats why valve sucks , they cannot keep their old stuff interesting , they make it crappy over the time they just change everything and they really orientate themselves on diffrent games and thats the point , they just copy terrible ideas of other games and add their own 'new' shit to it!
was it really so hard to just do it like in half-life 1 ? uve done it before , so why do you delete just everything what made half-life to 'Half-Life' ? but i see it doesnt help , u guys cannot understand me cos ur no 'real' fans of half-life and even if u think ur so u arent cos u like the new crap.

I could waste my time typing a couple of really long paragraphs to render that utter rubbish.

Yet i am going to sum it all up in a few words.

You are wrong.

Eber....

You're being stupid.

Vorts were worse off in HL1 (hell, i thought they were alien grunts when i player Op4 first!). In HL1 i had no feeling for them (besides a certain amount of pity, and "Get THE HELL OUTTA THE WAY, BARN- oh, never mind."

I like the "forum for vorts only" thing, but i think the semi-unconnected LAN works better.

Why do you think Vorts evolved an electrical attack? To fend off headcrabs? Is it still an electrical attack in Zen atmosphere (It is, isn't it)

I don't really agree with Eber, but I reckon they should have distorted their voices slightly, to make it sound slightly more other-worldly.
And of course my opinion matters.
