Assuming you have a virus scanner, ChrisCTX found out that adding a certain folder to your 'exclude' list will give you an increase of up to 30fps.
According to the article, The Steam/Appcache/stats folder gets written to for local stats keeping a load of times. Whenever a new file is created, your virus scanner by default will scan it, losing you precious fps. In the article are links for your various scanners should you need help, but it's a very interesting thought.
So if you try it out, post up your findings.
