I have had half life 2 for a while now. My specs are

WindowsXP
Intel Pentium 4 1.99 GHz
256 mb Ram
Nvidia Geforce MX 420

but i am now getting a new graphics card=
Nvidia Geforce 6600- 256mb

will HL2 run alot better or will I have to increase ram also to make it work better?

Increase RAM, do increase RAM... for the cause.

ok. but will it still work better without increased ram and just increase graphics card?

and how do you increase your ram?

You have to buy new ram and yes it will work better with the gfx card but I couldn't say how much better with only 256mb of ram. You can get a GIG of ram from newegg for like $80 or if they have a 1 day sale I've seen a gig of ddr 400 corsair for like $60-something

It will look nicer with that graphics card but it will probably chop a lot.

To increase your RAM, you buy more.

I don’t mean to throw a wrench into things here but… If you don’t have any idea how ram is added then you might want to get a friend to help you. You need to make sure you have ram that is compatible with your motherboard. Plus it’s best (but not necessary) for your ram to be the right speed for you processor. For example:
200 FSB : PC1600
266 FSB : PC2100
333 FSB : PC2700
400 FSB : PC3200
That’s what I’ve heard anyway…

btw its mhz not fsb

Buy more RAM. It started to get really choppy with long loading times, when I switched my gf4mx440 for a r9600, because with all the nicer graphics came all the things the pC has to load. I added a 512MB stick and voila! it runs really nice.

umm.... what?

You have a Dell? You poor man...

I'd get more than that. 1 gb of ram really would be great.

1 GB RAM and you're safe. Would be better if it'd be 512x2

yeah well im kind of on budget constraints...

If you can't get 1 GB RAM, try getting 768 MB, i.e. you'd only have to buy 256x2 RAM. I wouldn't advise 512, that's too few.

But 512mb is recommended requirements for HL2? Shouldnt it work fine or even perfectly?

(because at least 256mb is required)

You'll have to play on Medium settings (Maybe Shadows and Shaders set to High) if you'll want to have a smooth gameplay. With 512. Besides upcoming games require powerful PC's. Upgrade now. Better sooner than later.

thats crap. They shouldnt say 512 recommended and 256 needed on the box if you cant play it on its best with 512.

Yeah well, that's standard. And it's not to play the game with best settings that 512 is recommended. It's more like medium settings but good perfomance. If you want max settings *and* good performance, you gotta cash out some more.

Your whole computer should be overhauled, but yeah, 256MB RAM is shit, and you need to do 1GB.

Also,

TO XZEOX: DUE TO YOUR INEXPERIENCE WITH COMPUTERS DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL THE RAM YOURSELF, NOR CHOOSE WHAT STICKS YOU WANT. ASK A COMPUTER SPECIALIST TO INSTALL A GIG OF RAM FOR YOU

Thank you

To late. I already bought it. HA HA!:D
